Problems with Remote Desktop setup scenario

I have two secondary routers connected to a primary router provided by the ISP. My personal computers are connected to one router and a lab I have is connected to another. The lab is 2k8r2 with Hyper-V running VMs. I want to be able to connect my personal computers through the primary router to the lab server. I've given it a try and am not getting the connection I am looking for.

Does the public IP come into play even though I'm not actually going out to the internet? Is RD Gateway required or is some other method I am not seeing required. I would probably connect as an admin so I don't have to setup any roles or services.

I can hardwire the server to the same router as the personal computers but what I really want to do is find out how to do this correctly. I know that I could use LogMeIn or something along those lines but I'm kind of focused on learning RDS right now. Thanks for any help or links in advance. BTW, I seen most of the technet articles and other MS blogs on this topic.
