Odd behaviour logging in remotely to a VM machine on a windows 2012 hyper v server

This has me puzzled completely.

I have VMs working perfectly on the server.  I'm 200 miles away and remote in to access them and administer them. I have just set up another user to remote into his allocated VM.  He can log in and he can use the platform as if it were in front of him, fine.  He can open and use his email which uses the same gateway but different server.

BUT when he goes to start>computer and then clicks on the network button in the left pane, it comes up with something like 'net discovery is not enabled on this machine would you like to enable it?'. It shouldn't happen but I play along and get him to click enable.  It then asks him for an admin password so I try him with my domain admin.  No joy.  I have a brainwave and try the local admin password.  No joy.

I then tell him to log off and I try to remote in using his username and password.  I logon, I click on start>computer and then the network icon in the left pane.  It opens instantly and displays all the systems I expected to see.  I check the logon, yes it is him I'm logged on as.

He's in Glasgow and I'm in a village in Lincolnshire and the servers are in Kendall, Cumbria.  I can log on as him and do everything I should, he can logon and he can't get to the remote network shares.

What am I doing wrong?
