Dear All,
I have a particularly thorny problem:
A third party is performing a server and AD upgrade for us and have done the following:
- Copied our domain controllers into a new VMWare virtual infrastructure.
These were called DC1, DC2 and DC3. DC1 is physical and was “P2Ved”, DC2 and DC3 were both virtual and “V2Ved” into the new Infrastucture. Then the original systems were switched off. - They then prepared the Domain for upgrade to Windows 2008 R2.
- Two new Windows 2008 R2 domain controllers were created and the Domain upgraded to 2008.
- They then transferred the services from the old domain controllers to the new ones – AD, FSMO role, DNS and DHCP.
- Finally, they demoted the old domain controllers (in the new infrastructure) and switched them off.
All appeared to be working fine until we started having problems with users logging onto our Citrix servers. I’ve narrowed this down to a Terminal Server Client Access licence problem – the licence server was on DC1, one of the old domain controllers that has been switched off. The third party missed this when they transferred the services.
In addition we can’t locate the original paperwork for the Terminal Server Client Access licences (they were installed in 2008) so we can’t simply install them on the new domain controllers.
We still have the original physical server “DC1” that was untouched apart from P2Ving it into the virtual environment. I’ve booted this up away from the network, logged on and can see the licences – they all appear active. However, I don’t want to connect this server to our production network as it still has the AD, DHCP and DNS roles that are running on the new servers and were removed from the virtual copies and subsequently switched off.
Also, I’ve checked the virtual copy of DC1 – the one that was demoted and DNS and DHCP removed and I can’t logon. None of the usual passwords are working.
Is there any way we can transfer these licences over? Looking at the various support forums the general consensus is “reinstall the licences on the new servers with the original paperwork” which we don’t have.
Or, do we have another option? Can I switch off all of the services on the original physical server DC1 (AD, DHCP and DNS) leaving the only the licence server and connect this to our network? What are the risks with this option?
Any help would be appreciated.
