I have two Server 2008R2 servers used as TS client servers and I have 50 2008 RDS CAL's. Both servers had been working but one has now stopped. I get the error message "the remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator."
However, when I log on the the server to check the license information and configuration everything is reported as being OK. I can use the Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration MMC to view the config where I can see the Remote Desktop licensing mode is set to "Per User" and the Remote Desktop license servers is set to "Specified"
I can also click on the "Licensing Diagnosis" part of the snap in and it tells me "Licensing Diagnosis did not identify and licensing problems for the Remote Desktop Session Host server" Where it also tells me that there are 50 licenses available (as there should be) and that the Licensing mode is set to "Per User" The Licensing Diagnosis Information" window shows 0 warnings and says "Licensing Diagnosis did not identify any problems to report". Below this I can see in the "Remote Desktop Services License Server Information" windows the correct FQDN of my licensing server. I can then click on this entry and the license server information appears at the bottom of the screen telling me the correct server name, and that Per User tracking and reporting is available and that I have 50 licenses available.
The other server is basically exactly the same as the one that is not working, is located in the same part of the network, subject to the same set of firewall rules and has the same AD configuration applied to it.
So WHY can the server not see and use the licenses when I try ro RDP to the server?
I really could do with some advice here, every troubleshooting step I have taken tells me it should be working, but it is not.
