Remote Desktop connects to a 'Black Screen'

Hi,

I have a windows 2008 Sp2 server running as a Virtual Server on a windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V Host. The Server is currently the passive node of a CCR cluster in an Exchange 2007Sp2 Mail box Role. We use SCCM to patch the Exchange Environment with the restart suppressed in order to control the reboots and Failover. However recently the patches went out to all our servers and the reboot did not suppress, so as such there was no control on the restarts.

This caused an issue for RDP on two of our servers,

Specifically, a Black Screen on RDP connection

The first Server was the Hyper-V host (2008 R2). We were quickly able to resolve the RDP Black Screen on this server by using the fix of copying the rdpcorekmts.dll file from a non patched windows 2008 R2 Server.

On the second server, a  windows 2008 Sp2 Hyper-V Guest with the Exchange Mailbox role in a CCR Cluster (Currently the Passive Node) we have being unable to find a resolution. Server 2008 Sp2 does not have the rdpcoremts.dll file so this fix was not applicable. When we attempt to RDP the Server we are connecting but only to a Black Screen. The same applies if we try to connect to the Server from the Hyper-V Host mmc. So we have no console or RDP access to this server. However, the Server appears to be functioning normally

I can Ping the Server.

Exchange CCR Copy Status is Healthy. (Currently the Passive Node)

I can Connect to the Admin Shares

I can Remote Registry the Server

I can Remote Services to the Server. All Services including Remote Desktop Service are running

I can Remote the Event Viewer. There are no apparent Errors in the Event Logs to suggest that there is an issue with Remote Desktop.

Firewall and Antivirus are disabled. No routers between Client and Servers.

The Black Screen remains in Safe Mode or Low Resolution startup.

We have booted up from the W2k8 DVD to a command prompt and following the

directions from ‘ Windows Server 2008 Repair Install’ thread we tried

Chkdsk c: /f /r /x

SFC

Startrep.exe

We have used Testdisk to check the integrity of the MBR & MFT-

We have Run Remote Desktop with administrator privilege from Windows 7 Desktops, Windows XP, Windows 2008 & 2003 Servers. All leading to a Black Screen

We have tried mstsc /admin /v:[server ip]

We attempted to reinstall the RDP Client.

We also tried a number of other fixes that relate to the registry settings HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel Colurs

As yet, none of the above have fixed the issue and we are running out of ideas

Thank you in advance for any possible Help

Barry.
