RDS CAL loading & activation timing...

$

Hi all,

A vCloud provider handed over 2 servers to me, one to be DC and one to be RDS.

They decided it was a good idea to load the RDS server roles and per User CALS into the RDS Server before handing over to me without telling me.

I then begun to setup the DC and joined the RDS server to the domain after that without knowing or checking RDS roles were installed...and now we are getting a warning the CALS are not activated...Remote Desktop Licensing service also will not start.

Do we need to remove RDS roles and start again or can the CALS be reloaded and activated?

vCloud admins tell me they want to remove RDS roles and start again...WTF!?

As always, thanks in advance...

durrie.

Hi

I have this problems:
http://serverfault.com/questions/633145/rdsh-2012-r2-printers-duplicating-and-cannot-be-removed

He is talking about a patch, from Microosft.
Does anyone know if the patch is published?

Our problems is, that when we delete printers, it keep comming back.
Sometimes it come back as unspecified devices.
Other times, it slowing as a offline printers.

Our enviroment is a RDS 2012 R2 setup, with 7 servers.

The printers was assign with GPO before, but it is now manuel. The user add the printers there want.
There was always problems with GPO printers. Sometimes it dosen't slow up and so on.

If we delete all's printers in the user profile.
Delete all under HKLM\software\Microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\print\providers\client side rendering print provider

The problems is gone for some time, but it keeps getting back.

Could you point me in the right direction it will be great :)

RDS 2016 - multiple forests

$

Hi, I have implemented standard RDS 2016 farm deployment in single forest with single domain - 2 Web Access, 2 Connection Brokers and 2 Session Hosts) and collection with many published apps. I want to expand this somehow to other forests too which trust forest hosting RDS 2016 farm.

Is there any detailed guide how to implement this? There are some docs about multi-tenant RDS but I do not see anything useful for my case scenario. I guess I need new session hosts per forest but could I use existing WA/CB servers without adding new ones?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi

I have a 1 in all farm (all roles on 1 server) and when connecting remotely I frequently get disconnected. I have to kill the app from Task Manager, then login again and relaunch whatever remote app I was using.

This is the error that comes up:

What could be causing this?

Thanks, M

two rds deployments in single domain

Hi all,

we have an existing rds 2012r2 deployment in our domain. On the base of 2016, we want to build up a second, new rds deployment in the same domain. I found lots of information regarding rds migration from 2012r2 to 2016, but no documents which describe storing the rds informations in the AD and local System / Database. I would like to know that the two deployments do not interfere each other.

I found a hint that it works:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/72a8e236-1782-4f19-90c1-f5d08100e81b/multiple-rds-deployments-in-the-same-domain?forum=winserverTS
"Hi , yes you can have many RDS deployments in the same domain. "

Do you know documentation where I can find these informations ?

Best Regards,

Karsten

RemoteApp Problems on Windows Server 2016

$

We´ve got a problem regarding our users using the RemoteApps.

Our enviroment are two Terminalservers on a Windows server 2016 and one Connection Broker Server on a Windwos Server 2016 too.

A few users need to open the RemoteApps multiple times from different workstations so they connect multiple times to the Terminalservers.

the Problem now is that

the user X opens a remoteapp on workstation 1 the connection broker decides to give him a session on Terminal Server 1, now user X opens

a Remoteapp on Workstation 2, the connection broker gives him a session on Terminal server 2 for now everything works fine but if

user X opens now a remoteapp on workstation 3 you get a short message that says you are connected with RemoteApp- and Desktopconnectiion

but the Remoteapp wont start and if you click on "Details" you can see only a black screen.

So if the same User connects 2 times on the same Terminalserver the RemoteApp dont start and shows just a black screen.

We already edit the Registry:

 - fSingleSessionPerUser     value: 0

 - fdenyTSConnections value: 0

 and edit the Group Policy:

 - Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session    value: Disabled

 - double-click on Limit number of connections and then set the RD Maximum Connections allowed to 999999

Deleted Firefox, disabled everthing regarding sound.

 The Eventlog shows this warning:

"The installation of the default connection has been cancelled. A default connection cannot be used on a system that is part of a Remote Desktop Services deployment."

 "Event ID: 1026"

Does anyone have a Solution for this Problem?

 Thanks in advance.

RDS Servers Events 7011, 7046 - BSOD rdbss.sys

Hi All

I have a virtualised (VMWare) RDS 2012R2 environment with 20 Session hosts spread across 6 Dell ESXI Hosts - 2 Sets of different PowerEdge Models. Over the past 4-6 weeks we have started to get multiple event 7011's followed by a 7046.

A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the UmRdpService service.

The following service has repeatedly stopped responding to service control requests: Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector

At this point some existing connected users cant sign out and applications start to crash including explorer.exe. Trying to shutdown via the GUI just hangs and the only way to get the server back is to reset the power using vSphere console.

Applications on the Session Hosts are mainly MS Office 2016, Acrobat Reader, 7Zip and Webroot AV. Windows OS and applications are fully patched and up to date and Dell Firmware and drivers are fully up to date.

Users connect in via RemoteApp and local drives and printers are redirected into their sessions.

The weird thing is, like clockwork the crashes happen at the end of each day usually between 16:00 - 18:00 - To me its like a degradation symptom or perhaps its the actions of users disconnecting or logging off their session - Its affecting a couple of servers each day.

On top of this, it appears 7011, 7046 results in a BSOD. I have grabbed the Memory.dmp file and opened it with WinDbg.

Im now trying to figure out the dmp - uploaded to PasteBin here (happy to paste dmp here but didnt want to "dump" to much information in the post)

What stands out to me is rdbss.sys

Probably caused by : rdbss.sys ( rdbss!__RxAcquireFcb+1f3 )

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high.  This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.

Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, bitfield :
bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: fffff80179d3ba44, address which referenced memory

BUCKET_ID:  AV_rdbss!__RxAcquireFcb

PRIMARY_PROBLEM_CLASS:  AV_rdbss!__RxAcquireFcb

My rdbss.sys version - 6.3.9600.18895

Can anyone help to try and decipher the above and suggest next/best cause of action?

Many thanks :)

RDWeb access to session collections return error" no computers available in the pool ... but.

$

I have a fairly large Windows 2016 RDS deployment, and growing. Consists of 2 Connection brokers (load balanced) 2 rdweb servers and 5 collections of RDS session hosts, from 1 to 4 servers in each. F5 load balancer in front of the various farms with more than one SH. Certificates are all configured and trusted.

Connection via the F5 load balancer name occurs without a hitch, connections are spread across the nodes fairly evenly and users reconnect to disconnected sessions.

The collections are published to RDWeb access. All the session hosts are enabled to allow connections. When I click on one of the collection names, I get prompted to enter credentials which i do, then I'm told there are no computers available in the pool.

If I log into one of the session hosts first, directly via rdp client to the server name, and leave a disconnected session... then access the collection via rdweb I connect to the disconnected session without issue. As long as I leave a disconnected session behind, I can connect to it via rdweb access to the collection.

This happens with every collection I have configured. I've delete and recreated them all with the same result.

If I restart the session hosts in the farm, i can occasionally, briefly, connect without having a disconnected session already in place., Once i log off i can not log on again. I get the no computers available in the pool error from then on. Also, I can't always get this to work. Sometimes I reboot the SH and still get no computers in the pool.

I've dug through event logs, looking @ connection broker client and server logs but see nothing relevant. All the SH join the collections in the broker-client logs and complain about lacking resources to allow redirection on connection but that is because I've disallowed broker load balancing that via group policy for F5 compatibility.

I'm not sure where else to look for clues. Anyone seen this?

Is it possible that RDWeb access to the collections is dependent on the load balancing done by the connection broker and that by disabling that for f5 compatibility i've broken RDWeb connections to the collection?

How to publish same RemoteApp from same RDSH with gateway and without

$

Hi!

I have one Win 2016 server that is RD Web access, RD Gateway and Broker server. I'll have multiple Win 2016 RDSH servers hosting apps. How can I publish one application from one RDSH twice, once with a gateway for roaming users and another without gateway, for internal users?
I know I can publish RemoteApp with one config, download RDP file, edit it and manually distribute it. With the number of users, the manual method is not feasible.
I also know I can set Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses. This won't work due to different subnets.

Did I understand correctly, my whole deployment will be a subject to the same deployment settings? If I want to publish RemoteApp with a gateway from one RDSH and another RemoteApp without a gateway from another RDSH, I can't? Doesn't look like I can set RD Gateway settings per collection.

Thank you

CAL usage report discrepancy

$

We are using a terminal server to send content to five terminals. The users are in the active directory on a domain controller.

A CAL Usage report was generated. The number of "installed CALs" is 6 but the number of "CALs in use is 7". I think this is causing problems because sometimes  some of the terminals are locked. Is it possible to reduce the number of"CALs in use" to 6, so that it would match the number of installed CALs.I am guessing that this might alleviate the issue.

RDs 2012 R2

Hello what a mess Microsoft has created in 2012 r2,  for us in 2008 we were able to highlight all users to log them out, we have over 50 users in our servers at any given time, and when we do maintenance we take the servers out of load balance and send a msg to logout, then the ones that didn't get out we would highlight them all and log them off in one shot...what were you guys thinking with 2012 R2 I have not found a simple way to do this yet...

any help would be greatly appreciated.

As an extra security measure, we would like to apply a policy that removes previous domain information used to login by Remote Desktop.

Is this possible? Environment in a Windows Server 2016 domain with Windows 10 and 7 as workstations.

2016 RDS Host badpwdcount increments if a bad pwd is cached while enforcing "Always prompt for password upon connection"

$

Hello,

We were doing some experimenting with the latest RD Client for an iOS device and accessing a 2016 RDS Host.  What we noticed is that while we had the "Always prompt for password upon connection" enabled on the RDS host and if the correct password was cached in the RD Client on an iOS device, the server responded as expected with the "The server's authentication policy does not allow connection requests using saved credentials"

What was odd was that if the RD Client had an incorrect password cached, we would not get that response.  We would receive a "User name or password did not work" and the badpwdcount on the user account in AD would increment.

The point of this exercise was to see if we could prevent users from locking their accounts by having a bad password cached in the RD Client.  We thought enforcing the "Always prompt for password upon connection" would prevent this, but it does not.  It only prevents this if the correct password is cached.

Is this the expected behavior or is this a bug?  It seems kinda of pointless if the bad password is cached and yet it allows the badpwdcount to increment.   Kinda a DoS attack vector.

Appreciate any and all feedback.

RDS Connection Time Limit Exceptions

Hello,

I am working on a 2012 R2 Server and need help with Remote Desktop Services session time limits. I have a user who needs the screen to be on all the time to monitor critical areas and therefore cannot have their session disconnected. We have another user who already has this exception but I can't find where the exceptions are made. I've looked in GPEDIT.MSC and see that the time limits are enabled but that's all. Any help would be appreciated.

Move an RDS server between domains and migrate user profile data

$

We need to move several Remote Desktop Services servers (Server 2008 R2 and Server 2012 R2) from different domains to one consolidated domain and want to migrate/copy as much (local) User profile data as we can. Users will have the same username in both domains however, the 2 accounts will be independent of each other (different domains/SIDs etc) so we expect users in the new domain will have new user profile folders created (can’t re-use the old folders?).

Because the Source and Destination computer is the same device, will the User State Migration Tool (USMT) work?

Sorry, can't post links. It's the "usmt-migrate-user-accounts" page on Windows deployment section of "docs DOT microsoft"

Also looked at ADMT but never used it and unsure of implications.

"windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/cc974455(v=ws.10)" page on "docs DOT microsoft"

Any help/guidance appreciated.

Remote Desktop Printer Redirection - Printers disconnect each week - Fix is to reboot

$

Hello,

I have an issue where our clients remote into our RDS server and once a week all redirected printers stop working. Printers in the office on the same subnet as the server redirected also get removed from the users session in the RDS server including remote users. The fix is to reboot the server and then it is fine.

I get an Application error event ID 1000 that says

Faulting application name: csasvc.exe, version: 2013.0.1.0, time stamp: 0x52711da4
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.3.9600.18895, time stamp: 0x5a4b127e

I also see a lot of System event id 7000 errors like this and some saying a timeout has been hit

The Portable Device Enumerator Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I read this about changing the ServicesPipeTimeout but mine is set to 120,000

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/922918/a-service-does-not-start-and-events-7000-and-7011-are-logged-in-window

Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot this error?

The remote apps of my RDS 2016 deployment don't show

$

First: Yes I know this sounds like a familiar problem, but all the solutions I found over the last week on the internet didn't solve it.

We have a RDS 2016 deployment for our production system that works just fine. Now I have created (partly cloned) a similar system for our test environment. But I can't get that to work. After logging in to the RDWeb, the remote apps don't show.

The system consists of:

  • 1 RDCB: Connection Broker
  • 2 RDSH: Session Host
  • 2 RDS: Web Access and Gateway

The License Server is on the RDCB of the production system, but whether or not attaching it doesn't make a difference.

The RDS Servers are in a DMZ. But to make sure the firewall wasn't the problem, I also had them in the same subnet. It didn't make a difference.

I compared every bit and byte between the production and the test systems, but I can't find any differences.

I tried every suggested solution; I ended up completely destroying all test VMs and re-create them from scratch to make sure I had a vanilla envronment. Even that didn't make a difference.

What I see on the servers are different events:

  • RDS: event 10 (mentioning "TS Web Access Computers" security group)
  • RDSH: events 1296 and 1306
  • RDCB: event 1306 (but not for all 1306 on the RDSH)

I'm on my whit's end here. Can anyone point me in the right direction how to solve this?
