I would like to know if it is at all possible to setup the RDP service on a Windows 10 machine and allow a user from the same machine and another user from a remote machine to interact on running applications on a restricted desktop (no taskbar or program icons) etc.?

I'm having an issue on a single RDS 2016 server at the moment where the start menu doesn't open.  

I've gone though lots of steps including sfc /scannow  (No errors)   DISM with all the options (No Errors)

I've cleared the Registry in firewall policy\restricted services\configurable\system.

I believe the issue is that I don't have any applications registered in the get-appxpackage at all, it just comes back blanks where as on working machines I get a list of about 15.

I've tried to install the packages by hand using variations of 

Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\AppxManifest.xml -Verbose

I can't seem to get the system to re-register those applications!

Open to any suggestions?  (Please no, have you restarted the server!)

This happens on all users including local admin and new accounts.  Happens in Safe and Clean Boot.

We currently have a RDS Server on 2008r2 and I spun up a new 2016r2 with RDS role and updated CAL licensing. Im trying to figure out the best way to approach this. Should it be

Bring down old RDS server with remote.contoso.com and just give the static ip to the new 2016 server. Or do I need to migrate profiles from old server to new? Currently we run a Clustered environment between 4 hosts so everything is shared.

Windows Server 2016 RDS, session-based desktops, running as VMs under Citrix XenServer.

From time to time (every 2 days at this point), the Windows audio service seems to hang. This results in programs depending on it unable to start (for example Mozilla Thunderbird). When such a program does not start, it still shows in Task Manger, and I can see through the Analyze Wait Chain option that there is a thread waiting for a svchost.exe instance and following which services are being run - we find Windows Audio. Only Windows Audio, no other service.

Trying to restart Windows Audio service - long delay, after 5 retries it does stop. But then it won't restart and it says "cannot start Windows Audio because the end point is a duplicate". Whatever I try after this, nothing resolves it except a restart of the concerned session host.

Any solution for this?

There are numerous discussions on the internet that Windows Audio service problems cause black screen on Windows Server 2016 RDS. We also had this for the past 2 years. This problem seemed to have gone away about 2 months ago - possibly through April update, possibly through a fix applied as described in this thread.

But instead of the black screen, we now have this other problem - and it is still, or again, related to Windows Audio.

I have done no settings related to audio, there are no GPOs enabled/disabled having anything to do with audio.

What is WRONG with Windows Audio, and what can I do to fix it?

I have a Windows server 2016 domain controller under VMware vsphere 6.0 virtualization. Once the user logs in the RDP session, previously checked the printer local resource , neither usb printer nor network printers are available in the users RDP sessions.

We have disable the easy print through local and GPO domain policies.

Any ideas to solve it?

I build a RDS deployment based on server 2016. After I finished building my session host and users tested it successfully, I cloned and sysprept the server in VMware vCenter.

Everything works fine and user can login and work on the servers without any problems.

When me and my colleague admins login to the cloned servers with our admin accounts, we always get a message like below;

User profile disks are configured in the environment. Folder redirection is enabled to redirect profile folders to H:\. This is inherited from the original RDS 2008 setup that we are migrating from.

I already tried to delete the entry from the profilelist key in the registry. But this didn't solve anything.

How can I fix this?

I'm working in a Server 2019 RDS environment with a child domain running 2016 DCs.  The 2019 domain is the child of the 2016 domain.  In the Resource Authorization Policies on RD Gateway server 2019 I am adding a Universal computer group from the child domain.  Often, but not always, I get an error "Windows cannot process the object with the name "computer_group" of the following error: The handle is invalid."  I can open file explorer and go to the permissions of a folder and successfully add the same computer group.  If I go back to RD Gateway console it still does not add the group.  I can wait a random time and it may add it or it may give the same error.  Folder permissions has never failed to add the group.  There does not seem to any other cross domain permissions or communications that has any trouble.  Is there some trouble with RD Gateway console that is just flaky?  Anyone else seen this?

Hello, I currently have a Remote Desktop Server "Windows Server 2012 R2" running in a small but busy Accounting Office and it's working great but during last tax season it bogged down from time to time so we are considering implementing a 2nd Remote Desktop Server to help service the load..

Here's some details:

1 - Approx 30 Users running MSOffice and Accounting Apps connecting via RDWeb to run Apps..

2 - The current RDS is a Physical installation with no Gateway as there's no external access at this time to limit security issues.

Question: My plan is to install a New Host "Windows Server 2016" and implement the new RDS as a Virtual Server and I'm not sure if I should tie it back to the current Physical so it can manage the load balancing or if I should just set this up as a separate standalone and just instruct the users how to access each server.. 

My concern is if I tie it to the Physical RDS and there's a problem with the physical server then will it prevent users from accessing the new Virtual RDS..

Over the past few days I've been all over the internet but I was unable to find out definite answers to my questions so I thought it best to ask them here :)

Background

On Microsoft Azure I have hosted a Virtual Machine running Windows Server 2019. The purpose of the virtual machine is to host a suite ofin-house applications and allow various clients to log into the system to use the applications. For example: installing a student profile system on a central server and allowing lecturers to access the application.

Currently I have set up 7 different user accounts and given them remote access privileges. The server allows will allow 5 concurrent remote sessions at any given time. To enable concurrent sessions I have activated the "Remote Desktop Services" role along with the 120-day licensing grace period.

Question 1: CAL's - Which ones?

As far as I understand enabling more than two concurrent users requires the purchase of Client Access licenses (CAL's). Since the users will always remote into the server externally from their own machines, which CAL type will I have to purchase? I have seen Microsoft offers an RDS CAL, is this the one I have to use?

Question 2: CAL's - How many?

Since I have 7 users but only allow 5 users simultaneous access, how many CAL's should I purchase?

Question 3: CAL's - Validity period

Do CAL's have an expiration date or can I buy them once?

Question 4: CAL's - Transfer between servers

Should it happen that I delete the current virtual machine and create a new one, will it possible to transfer the CAL's between the servers?

I am in the U.S. and I want to connect remotely to a computer in Europe from my office. It works fine and fast when connect from my home apartment here in the U.S to the computer in Europe. However, it is slow when I want to connect from my office here in the U.S. to the computer in Europe. It also works fine when I connect from public locations (airport, etc.). So I thought it has something to do with the internet connection in my office. I am connecting via a guest account to the WiFi. There is no cable available. The internet seems fast, according to speedtest.net I have a 7ms ping, 95mbps download, and 85mpbs upload (this is faster than my internet at home). 

So maybe there are some security settings in the WiFi that prevent a fast connection. I connected to the Internet via my phone + 4G and I also turned off all the windows firewalls. But the same problem arises, the RDC is slow whenever I connect from my office. In the RDC settings, my connection speed is 56k (modem) and all the boxes are unchecked (except for "reconnect if the connection is dropped").

Since the RDC generally works, but it does not in a specific location (using different ways to access the internet), my conclusion is that there is something wrong with my physical office location?! (too much concrete in the building?!) 

PS: I am using Windows 10 on both computers. I noticed that the RDC generally is fast whenever I get at leat 3 bars in the bars that indicate the quality of the connection. At home I get 3. In my office I get 1-2 using the guest WiFi or my phone. So I need to get the quality of the connection in my office up to 3 as well.

Now i have 4 terminal servers Windows 2008 R2 and each of them is hosting a specific application. I am in process to upgrade to windows 2012 R2 terminal servers. I am thinking to create a farm with 4 terminal servers and each of them to have all 4 applications together installed. Is this good idea to install all application to all servers or i should keep them separately?All these servers are virtual machines.

I have a strange issue where I cannot get remote app working through Windows 10. Currently, users can remote into the server using remote desktop services and also through RDweb (Remote Web). When I go to control panel>RemoteApp and Desktop Connections and add the URL it keeps asking me for the credentials and saying that our credentials did not work. 

It is just on remoteapp. 

The SSL certificate is correct and set up and I do not get a certificate warning when accessing the site through the browser. 

Not sure what else to try and bit of a loss to be honest. If anyone has any ideas then that would be appreciated.

i have a RemoteApp farm (1 Session Host, 1 SessionBroker with RD Web Services and no GateWay).
The Problem is when a Client (for example windows 10 Enterprise 1709) starts an application from work resources, it stuck.
When i click on details, i can see a Login Screen from the sessionbroker.

i have already searched the web, but couldn't find a solution

At the moment i have a RD Licensing Service running in the old.domain. But now i need to run the exact same server in the new.domain. The Users are already migrated to the new.domain.

But when I change the servers domain from old.domain to new.domain i get the following message:

"the following servers in this deployment are not part of the server pool" 

Can someone help my with this?
