Hello all,

I installed  RDS roles (including licence server) on one server in domain.

I Installed user licences and licence server works like a charm.  But...!!  There was change of plans and our licencing server will go on domain controller.  I installed licencing server on DC, activated server itself and now whatever key I put in server i get error message    "Licence code not recognised"  ....i put that same key in original licence server and it is ok ???

How to disable Remote Desktop Access but allow RemoteAPPs to run?

Hi everyone,

We have RemoteApps working fine. Unfortunately, it also enables Remote Desktop Connections as well so the user who is supposed to ONLY use the RemoteApp directly from the .rdp file now can have access to full Remote Desktop. Is there a way to disable remote desktop but allow remote apps (.rdp files)?

Thanks

RDWeb - Password complexity error

$

I just configured RDWeb-access on the server by setting the PasswordChangeEnable as true (IIS -> Pages -> Application settings)

Page shows up, Users can login..all good.

The problem is, when they try to change their password, it says:

Your new password does not meet the length, complexity, or history requirements of your domain. Try choosing a different new password.

No matter what password you put it, it would not take the password. I even tried something like A19G8fczAe!!W

** I have disabled password complexity in Group policy. ** still no hope.

BUT - when i go to AD and set the user to : Must change password at next login.

Then I go to RDWeb and try. It successfully changes the password..

So it only works when i set the user up to MUST CHANGE PASSWORD NEXT LOGIN..

is it how it should work?

Users want to change their passwords whenever they want..but it doesnt work.

am I missing something?

Search/Indexing for RDS Server

I have 3 RDS session host boxes running on Server 2016. We also have FSLogix installed for the indexing for Outlook between boxes. I've got one session host server that I can't seem to get basic Windows search to work. Such as you open the start menu and type "Control Panel" nothing shows up and it says at the top "These results may be incomplete.." I've installed the Windows Search Feature and it is running. I've also went into the control panel and saw that the indexer was running and did a rebuild on it. Indexing shows complete as well after it finishes.

I spent a while on it and then decided to just wipe the entire system and rebuild it. After rebuilding I am still having the same issue with this one Session Host box. Any suggestions?

Thanks

File copy over RDG slow

Hi all, we have the following setup in our hosted environment:

Server 1 - RDG, Gateway and License

Server 2 - Session host

They are server 2019.

If I RDP into server 1 and do a file transfer, (copy and paste) the speed is decent. for ex 2MB/sec..

If I RDP into server 2, the transfer speed goes down the toilet, like 300-400KB / sec

Connectivity between server 1 and 2 is fine, they are in the same network.

Any idea?

Reconnect to Disconnected Session

Windows Server 2019

User is allowed to create multiple remote desktop sessions.

User disconnects but cannot reconnect to disconnected session. This seems to be the case unless only one session is allowed per user.

Is there any way to reconnect to a disconnected session when a user is allowed to have multiple sessions?

RDS webpage not accessible from the internet. Works internally...

Hello!

We have (4) rds servers with the following roles installed:

rds1 : RD Gateway

rds2: RD Connection Broker, RD Licensing , RD Web Access

rds3: RD Session Host

rds4: RD Session Host

The prior it engineer did something and the webpage of the rds servers are not accessible from the internet anymore. It is accessible only internally. I checked the firewall that we use and the static ip from the provider points to the server internally using NAT. What else i have to check? Maybe the windows firewall? Could you please through me some ideas?

Thank you in advance!

From roaming profiles to user profile disks

Hi folks,

I have a Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Services environment. On one server collection there areno UPD's configured. Each user account has a roaming profile path configured on the profile tab in AD.

I want to migrate to User Profile Disks. There is some content in the roaming profiles directories that has to be in the User Profile Disks in order to start an application properly.

On the website below I red that the content is copied automatically after configuring the UPD path and logging on and off with a user account. I presume I can delete the roaming profile pathafterwards?

https://www.techslave.ch/2016/03/10/from-roaming-profiles-to-user-profile-disks-part-i-2/

The question is, is this information correct? Or is there another / better way to do this, or is this the way to go?

Need a solution for allowing Remote Desktop access for a limited number of users.

I've been searching and searching but I'm not getting all the pieces together.  Here is what I need to accomplish:

  1. A VM running a modern Windows OS to run a specific application suite.
  2. That VM needs to be able to handle up to 5 concurrent Remote Desktop connection actively using the application mentioned above. (The application suite is designed to be able to handle this.)
  3. Users will be connecting with tablets, laptops and desktops from the local network and from external connections as well.

The application suite runs a database and is normally installed on multiple desktops with one of them being the "master" running the DB.  Maintaining the multiple desktops is less practical compared to one VM that everyone connects to.  I've seen "hack" ways to run multiple remote connections to Windows 10 and such but I'm looking to do this right.  This application suite is going to be used for the foreseeable future and I don't want to hack it together waiting for an update to break the hack.

What I am asking for is help with what I need for this use case.  I'm ok with building multiple servers (in ESXi/VMware) if needed, though I would prefer only one.  I also would really rather use a per user license since the users are regularly changing out the devices they are connecting with.

I have downloaded and build basic VMs with the eval versions of Server 2019 Essentials and Standard.

The Remote Desktop Management service terminated with the following service-specific error %%4294967295

Got this error after a reboot for the monthly MS hotfixes. After messing around too much, I finally found the problem and though that I would document it here since I have not found the solution anywhere I looked.

This is in a Remote Desktop setup of two RDCB using a SQL DB that is hosted on a third server. The Remote Desktop Management service would fail to start with the "The Remote Desktop Management service terminated with the following service-specific error: %%4294967295" error because the SQL Server service hosting the database was offline. It had not automatically restarted after the same hotfixes. So I started the SQL server, then was able to get Remote Desktop Management to start on my RDCB without any delay.

Remote Desktop Connection --integrated login functionality

$

Is there someone that can assist with a fairly simple question I have regarding the servers I have hosted in Azure? When remoting into servers hosted there, I have my credentials saved within Remote Desktop Connection manager, so connection is automatically established when I initiate it. However, I still get prompted for a Windows login after connection made, and I still have to manually input my password. Can the integrated login functionality be implemented on these servers, as I'm always logging in/out of them. This is how the servers in the Other data center currently behave.

USB Drive redirection except local drives

hello every one

i have a issue with RDP redirection

the problem is i can't redirect just usb drives but not the local drives

i think of some script to run when the rdp session is created on the server and map the usb on the user's computers

but i don't know where to start

i also tried redirection policies in group policy but when you Disable drive redirection it's also assume the usb drive as a drive so i can't use the group policy or other things except some script that map detect the PnP devices on user's computers and map it and prohibit the local drives redirection.

thank you in advance

A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service to connect.

We are seeing the following error during start up on more than one of our VMs running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter, this is prevent users from being able to RDP to the server. It seems this error resolves itself as the WID service does eventually start, but the dependent RDS services do not start thereafter, but will start with manual intervention. The following are the errors listed in the event log:

1. A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service to connect.

2. The MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

3. The Tssdis service depends on the MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

4. The TScPubRPC service depends on the MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

There is also the below message logged before the first error, but I'm not sure this is the actual cause, as said previously, it does eventually start, which makes me think its a timing issue.

The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{D63B10C5-BB46-4990-A94F-E40B9D520160}
 and APPID
{9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276}
to the user NT SERVICE\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID SID (S-1-5-80-1184457765-4068085190-3456807688-2200952327-3769537534) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

Additionally, this does not happen each time the server starts and is seemingly random, but we are seeing similar behavior on another server with RDS installed.

I've found the following post, but this is not a fix and merely extends the timeout value for all services.

RDS Deployment CAP and RAP

$

Hello all,

currently i'm workiong on RDS farm. Plan is to have one farm of 3 servers. One of these 3 servers is RD gateway and licencing server.

We would like to limit remote desktops hops.  So if user connects to RDS farm we want to control what is accessible via remote desktop (next hop from RDS farm) to group of users or particular users which connects to the farm for security reasons.

I was trying to configure CAP and RAP policies in RD gateway manager so i can limit group of user only to limited domain computers that this users or group can use and block more critical servers.  But whatever i do if user connects to RD farm he can remote to any pc in domain (if RD is enabled or has credentials) .

Is this even possible or there is some catch in this deployment ???

Thanks in advance

GP with RDP access in place not working on new win10pro v1903 computers

Hi,

I am noticing that an RDP GP on server 2016 DC no longer seems to be working properly on new windows 10 pro v1903 computers in a domain... I found that the slider for rdp in systems settings of windows 10 shows as off and not on like on existing computers where rdp still works.. I have had to unjoin the computers from the domain.. manually turn the slider to on and rejoin the computer to the domain to have it work again..

anyone know why this is or if a change needs to be made to the GP?

cannot set client access name using Set-RDClientAccessName in single RDCB config

$

Hello. I've deployed new (testing) RDS deployment (1x WS2019 RDCB, 1x WS2019 RDWA, 1x WS2016 RDSH). I wanted to set client access name as we previously did in our older WS2016 RDS deployment (with HA RDCB) using Set-RDClientAccessName, but it is failing.

Running the command on the 2019 RDCB, it fails with:

PS C:\Users\admin> Set-RDClientAccessName -ConnectionBroker rdcb.ad.domain.com -ClientAccessName rds.domain.com -Verbose
Set-RDClientAccessName : The RD Connection Broker server is not configured for high availability.
At line:1 char:1
+ Set-RDClientAccessName -ConnectionBroker rdcb.ad.domain.com -Cli ...
+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Write-Error], WriteErrorException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.WriteErrorException,Set-RDClientAccessName

I've looked at currect documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/remotedesktop/set-rdclientaccessname?view=win10-ps) and it says this works with non-HA RDCB config too. Has something changed for WS2019? Since the documentation hasn't been updated for WS2019.

RDS Some Users Cannot pull their User Profile DIsk

$

I have a Server 2012 R2 RDS Farm using User Profile Disks residing on a separate server.  We have been using this without issue for a couple years.  Recently we had issues with the Hyper-V host the profiles VM was running on so I moved it to a different host.

Ever since I moved it their are several (But not ALL) users that cannot connect to their profiles.

Some users actually log into one of the RD HOSTs but do not use or create a UPD.  And, some attempt to log in and get disconnected.... Screen actually disappears.

Not sure how to troubleshoot this one because I have about 400 people working fine.

RDS 2016 second prompt for remoteapp

HI

I have deployed new RDS 2016 and share remote apps. After login through RDWeb I try to start any app and I get second prompt for credentials but there is information: The server's authentication policy does not allow connection requests using saved credentials.

I can start remote apps from another RDS on 2012 R2 from this computer without second prompt so I assume that something wrong on the RDS 2016 server. But what?

Cheers

GPO Remove File menu from File Explorer not working

$

Hi all,

I have a question concerning activating the following GPO:

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> File Explorer -> Remove File menu from File Explorer.

We have enabled this GPO item but for some reason when I login via RemoteApp (which solely starts File Explorer) the 'File' menu item keeps being visible. Is there anything we're doing wrong or doesn't it work at all? And if the latter is the case why is the option there?

Details of our environment:

Windows Server 2012R2 RDS Session Hosts.

RDS farm with a connection broker and Remote Desktop Gateway (on the same server).

Thank you in advance!
