Weird session hanging in Remote Desktop/Remote Access

$

I do the IT work for a local small business. A few months ago the owner decided to change from one software vendor to another. The previous was a web based application and the new one is accessed through Remote Desktop/Remote Access to a Windows 2008 R2 server. All of our desktops run the latest up-to-date versions of Windows 10, all are HP computers, all get about 50mbps down and 20mbps up. We went live with the system on the first of the month however since the beginning our client desktops will experience odd session hanging/freezing seemingly randomly. I will bring up another program(Google Chrome, Outlook, etc) for a few minutes and go back and it will be "frozen". Although this is inconsistent as I can do the same thing for longer and it won't hang/freeze. When this happens I'll kill the app in task manager. Then I go through the log in process again and it brings up the session just how it was before it "froze" saying something along the lines of "Are you sure you want to restart the connection" with yes and no options. I'll then hit no to continue the previous session and it is like it never happened. This only takes a minute but this happens 10-20 times a day for each of my users and they are getting frustrated.

The vendor says they are working to find a solution and that our problem is unique, however it has been a few weeks and they haven't really said much outside of normal troubleshooting efforts. I cannot do anything server side, that's on them, but on the client side I've tried just about everything I could think of or find. I've tried turning off/on just about every MSTSC setting there is, I've updated all drivers for everything(was specifically targeting network and graphics), I've disabled auto-tuning on the NIC, I've edited the registry to only only allow TCP connections in TS, I've reset our router, and I've tried other remote desktop apps. When we went live and noticed it happening we immediately did a Ping Monitor on one of our hosts for a week and ruled out network/internet issues. I've also remoted in to the server from a Windows 8 laptop from home and the issue was not present. Event viewer show nothing anywhere, it's like it isn't happening even though it is.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions, I'm open to anything at this point. If not I'll wait around for the vendor to hopefully figure it out.

Windows Server + RDP + Office License clarity

Dear Community, can some one clarify/advise me on the below scenario please ?

I am planning to go for Windows Server + RDP CALS + Office 365 Subscription with 10 RDP devices. Around 10 Users will do remote session using rdp devices and use word or excel.

1. As Windows Server 2019 is latest, I will go with that. Now for 10 RDP users/devices, I will go for 10 RDP CALS. So, am I still need to buy Windows Server 2019 User/Server CALS separately ?

2. 'Office 365 Home' subscription webpage says 'Share with your entire family – for up to 6 people' In that case is it enough if I buy two subscriptions for 10 users?

Thanks is advance.

When we copyed from the local desktop to the remote app, the pasted content became duplicate.

By the way, when switching from a local app like Chrome to the Remote App, the first mouse click in remote app will be double click.

RDS 2019 + KB4519338 Roaming Start Menu fails

Cross-post from here, where I was redirected to this forum.

We have a bunch of Server 2019 RDS machines, that until last weekend worked fine. For roaming the start menu we roam AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore and so far that worked perfectly for having for examples Tiles saved that users put in the start menu themselves.

Since installing KB4519338 this weekend during our maintenance, the start menu is not working anymore. Only right-click works, but the start menu itself is not functional. We all know the start-menu terror from Windows 10 syspreps and what not. When I remove AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\CloudStore from roaming, the start menu works again, but of course customizations aren't saved. We've tried roaming AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches as well, as that's to be seen in some howto's, but we've never found that to be needed, and it doesn't help here either.

Anyone else with this issue? By the way the latest as of yet KB4520062 does not fix this either, even if that has some start menu fixes.

rdweb authentication error 0x607

Hi,

I deployed a RDS 2012r2 with a self-singed certificate and everything worked until I changed the certificate with a third party cert.
I can still login using RDP from a client through RDS Gateway and broker .. is working, but when I try to log on through RDWeb I get the famous "authentication error 0x607" error.
Setting/changing the collection security to low ... is not working for me.I can't imaging that recreating the collection is the only solution to this.

Thank You,
Best Regards,

Logging off RDP users

$

I have several RDS servers that numerous users connect to. (MS Server 2016 and 2012) Everyday at 5:05PM, we have to "logoff" certain users from their sessions. I use Remote Desktop Services Manager to see all the users connected to RDS servers. Manually I CTRL and select the users I need to logoff. Then right-click and Logoff. Works fine. However,

I want to automate this process and haven't found a way to do so using the following criteria:

1. Needs to be by username. Session ID will change. Username doesn't.

2. I can build a list of usernames (that will be edited as users come in and out of the criteria for logoff - i.e. salespersons come and go)

3. Would like some sort of script that references the usernames on the list then searches for RDP connections they may have.

4. If found, the user will be logged off their session.

NOTE - CANNOT "kill" or "reset" the connection. Logging off allows the software they're using on the remote server to be properly closed before dumping the session.

5. This script process can be Task Scheduled on each of the remote servers and set to execute at 5:05PM daily (M-F) or it can look for these users and perform the logoff via the Remote Desktop Services Manger on my PC..

Open to any ideas.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Server 2008 R2 RPD collapse

30.10.2019 I found some problem with connecting via RDP to server 2008 R2. Sometimes it works sometimes doesn't. Restarting TerminalServices helps.

There wasn't any updates or changes on server before problem. There are same problem with all of my three Server2008R2. It doesn't matter if I am trying with Windows 7 or 10 or Mac.

Does anybody find same problem or even get a solution?

Can 2016 RDS Connection Broker or Gateway redirect users to collections based on permissions?

$

I'm in the process of building a 2016 RDS Test Environment ahead of us decommissioning our old 2008 R2 terminal servers. What I'd like to know is if it's possible for users to RDP (usually via thin client) to a single DNS address and have the CB or GW redirect said user to the server collection the user has access to. For example, user Tony Stark is in R&D and RDPs into RDSFarm1, then gets directed to a RDSH server in the R&D collection, while user Nick Fury is in Management and RDPs into RDSFarm1, then gets directed to a RDSH server in the Management collection. I realize something like this is possible when using RDWeb, but I do not want users to launch RDP session desktops this way, especially with older thin clients. Not we also aren't publishing RemoteApps. Is this configuration possible or should I hard code thin clients to connect to specific RDS servers/collections, as we're doing now in our 2008 R2 environment?

Shadowing not working for Domain Admin

Hi,

I have a domain user with domain admin rights who is unable to shadow Windows 2016 RDP Sessions with "Access Denied" message. He is already added in the local administrators group on RDP Server. If he logs in to the RDP Server using local administrator account, he can shadow.

Any suggestions?

Windows Search Service keeps getting disabled

I've enabled search service as automatic delayed start was we need it to index Outlook. It seems to work for a few days then goes back to disabled mode.

Why is that? What can we do to prevent it from happening as we need indexing to work for Outlook.

thank you

RDP to Windows 10 VM, connection timeout multiple times a day...

$

I just recently upgrade a virtual machine to Windows 10 Pro.  To access the VM, I use RDP.

I had never ran into any issues connecting to the VM through RDP when it was Windows 7.  The connections always went through with no timeouts or errors.  Unfortunately after I performed to Win10 upgrade, it seems like I receive multiple connection timeouts throughout the day.  The only way to get RDP to connect is to reset the VM using Vsphere and then it will work for a little while.  As soon as it is left alone for a little while (I tried keeping track of time frame but it varies from 5 minutes to 2 hours), the RDP will start timing out again when trying to connect.

I've looked through the power settings, turned off hibernation, and added registry entries to keep it from locking or sleeping but nothing has solved the issue.

Has anyone experienced this before?  Any feedback or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance

Hi All,

I got an event id 1069 on Windows 2016 Server. This Windows 2016 RDS license server configured for per device license with specific RD license server. The RDS license server was activated and has 7 servers which use Session Host. No matter on RD License Server 2008 R2, also other servers. We tried just regular RDP to the console and always got the following error, on the event log of the RDSH.

--- event id 1069
The RD Licensing grace period has expired and Licensing mode for the Remote Desktop Session Host server has not been configured. Licensing mode must be configured for continuous operation.

This server congifured Domain Environment and operated serveral years.

I don't know what I miss.

Publish RemoteApp into a Remote Desktop Hosted Desktop

$

Hello,

I'm currently building up a Geo-LoadBalanced RDS farm for a client, where almost all users connects to the farm with DellWyse 3040. Everything going well so far.

I need to publish a RemoteApp to the hosted desktop as this RemoteApp is a very high resource consumer.

I was planning on having 2 collections in my farm, one for the Remote Desktops, and the other for this RemoteApp. I've configured a GPO for configuring the "Work Ressources" to the RDSH of the Desktop Collection to get the App directly displayed in the StartMenu of my users.

The remote app is well displayed, (or I can get it from an access to the http://url/RDWeb) but when I launch this RemoteApp, I have an error message displayed "Internal error occurred".

Any thought on the feasability ? And on the way to achieve this configuration ?

Cheers

2019 RDS Gateway slow logon. Approx. 80-100 seconds.

Can't figure out why login through RDS Gateway is so slow...

I've setup a 2019 RDS environment.

It's all VM's
Server: Connection Broker and License Server
Server: Session Host (Server 2019)
Server: Gateway (in DMZ)

Using FSLogix.
MFA plugin through Azure.

When logging in from inside network it's fast. (Not asking for MFA)
When logging in from outside through gateway, it takes 1:40 minutes before desktop is ready. (Asking for MFA)

Using a RDP file.
MFA challenge comes ~11 seconds after password is entered.
After that: "Configuring remote session" in a long time.
Occasionally the login is way faster.
(after I wrote this, the MFA challenge took 4 seconds and was 100% logged in in about 10 seconds through gateway)

I can't see where to begin troubleshooting...

Sometimes the connection is lost, asking the MFA challenge again.
Tried using "Negotiate" and  "RDP Security Layer"

Tried looking Event Viewer on several servers with no luck

Sorry for the jumping in text.

RDS Deployment, Server 2012 R2 and 2016, cannot connect when added as a remote resource on modern app

$

Hello,

I've been having an issue connecting to new RDS deployments, either Server 2012R2 or 2016, using the modern client (UWA?).

If I connect to the rdweb site via  browser, any browser (Chrome, IE, Edge), I can connect fine w/ the downloaded RDP file, either via the old mstsc client, or the modern client.  If I open the modern client and add my deployment as an RDS resource, it adds file, but when I try to connect, it doesn't do anything.  Monitoring network traffic, it doesn't even try to connect to the rpcproxy.dll,or even send any packets on the wire to my gateway.

Doing some digging, I see the rdp file is saved in my user profile (C:\Users\#####\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.RemoteDesktop_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\RADC\{9AFF1AD1-C68D-FC28-FA01-4BD806FA43E4}-Committed\Resource) without an extension.  If I copy the file from there, give it a .rdp extension, I can also connect with that file via either client.

I also don't appear to be able to add the remote resources, at all, via the IOS RD Client.  I haven't tried Mac or Android yet, waiting to stabilize this config, but perhaps that's a separate issue.  I don't see it trying to logon or connect to webfeed.aspx on the RDSWeb page at all.

These would all be the lastest iterations of the clients, I just started this whole setup about a week ago.  I've tried a standard deployment in 2016, then a quick deployment in 2016, and finally a quick deployment in 2012 R2.  I'm familiar with all the cert requirements, etc, I don't think it is any sort of cert issue.  I will say the 2012 R2 quick deployment seemed to work OK initially, until I added 2016 session hosts to the deployment, but now I can't say for sure.  If needed, I could do another quick deployment to verify.

Any insights would be great.  If we can only use rdweb and have users open RDP files I guess we're OK with that, but not ideal.

Thanks!

Blue Screen in Server 2008 R2 Standard - termdd.sys

$

I have an issue with a 2008 R2 Standard Server that my client has just taken over.

I have made no config changes whatsoever since it came "onboard" but suddenly I am getting a number of Bluescreens relating to termdd.sys.

Terminal Services are not licensed on this Server and only the admin sessions are used.

I ran a chkdsk/r and sfc /scannow and both came up clean. I am a bit baffled as to where to look next at the moment.

Below is the minidump analysis of the latest blue screen (this morning). There are others if it helps - but they amount to the same issue.

Help and advice appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Steven
