Need user to stay signed in (RD/Terminal server)

$

Using Windows Server 2012 R2 as a Remote Desktop Server, we have an application that requires a user to be signed in at all times.  They didn't design a way to do this better, but the customer wants it.

I see how to setup auto-login, so I'm not asking about that.

The timeouts are all set to unlimited but we still have issues with the account being logged out.  Is there a way to stop this from happening?  I was thinking of maybe even a script that detects that it's logged out and logs it back in again somehow.  Or even software that would need to be purchased that will do this well.

Thanks for any help.

securing RDP with SSL, are custom certs needed?

https://www.derekseaman.com/2018/12/trusted-remote-desktop-services-ssl-certs-for-win10-2019.html

based on this article the author creates a copy of the "computer" template from an internal PKI. He adds an additional key usage just for RDP authentication.

I am already issuing "computer" certificates to all domain joined machines (servers and workstations). They are already copies of the original "computer" certificate template. My question is, do I still need to even perform the steps of making an RDP specific certificate template?

If both client and server already have computer certificates and trust, why would I need a specific RDP certificate template?

Remote Desktop services

Hi All,

I'm new to remote desktop services, as i recently build up 2 connection broker (HA with dns roundrobin) + 2 session host (farm). What we wanted to achieve is to have user session/application (especially Microsoft office half way of doing) failover when one of the session host is failed due to hardware or OS problem. I found some of the forum claimed that it normally will need to reconnect to available session host and reopen the application where all the non save data is gone. Any alternative solution?

I need some advise on this..

Thanks.

RDP Client Randomly Crashes

I have a Titan workstation with a RDP connection to a Dell precision. The Dell will randomly (minutes to hours into connection) reboot. When I am able to get back into it, the event viewer shows DCOM errors around the time of the crash and Service Control Manager errors. I've looked around the web as best I can, tried several fixes, to no avail. The Dell stays up on its own as long as I don't remote into it, so of course I suspect RDP as the culprit, but am not techy enough to know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When this happens the start menu will not work. This corresponds with me enabling the roaming of C:\Users\user\AppData\Local

I'm wondering if there is a folder I should exclude from roaming.

If it's not being caused by roaming the local folder then it may be caused by some GPO settings I also changed. I did this because windows search was out of control and consuming too many resources. Unfortunately I cannot disable search completely because of Outlook. My discussion on Outlook and search I had to re enable indexing outlook.

Any guidance on this is appreciated.

So far the only fix I've come up with is temporary, which is to delete the local profile and on the next login the start menu works. After a day or 2 it stops working again. I haven't totally recreated the user profile and I'm hoping this is not the ultimate fix because that would be a PITA to have to do that for all the users that have this happen.

Can't enable Drive/Printer-Redirection

Hi there,

I've setup 2008 R2 with Remote Desktop Services and want to enable Drive-Redirection so Users which use Remote-Apps can use their local drives. Unfortunately I cannot remove the mark at "RDP-Tcp Properties" > "Client Settings" and Drive, Printer etc is greyed out and clicking on the checkbox doesn't work. I found no Policy which may be responsible for this...

Where do I have to enable Drive-Redirection?!

Hello colleagues

When we are doing such config (enable multiple sessions per user):

Computer Configuration\ Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\ Remote Desktop Services\ Remote Desktop Session Host\ Connections

Restrict Remote Desktop Services users to a single Remote Desktop Services session     Disabled

We are not able to reconnect to any disconnected session that was running previously.

It seems that it was mentioned here for Inside build, but we have same...

Blackscreen after logon

$

Hi

We have a problem with logon times on our RDP 2012R2 servers. It must be related to the roaming profile.

The problem:

The users logon on via RDP. The profile gets loaded, applying group policy settings and so on, and then the "black screen" starts. I can take up to 15 minutes before the users desktop is visible and ready to work.

While there are black screen I can press CTRL+ALT+DEL and go to the task manager. The only process that is working is explorer.exe.

If we create a new profile the users are logged in less than a minute, but the logon process and the time for the black screen increases over time. It happens for all our users on our 30 RDS servers.

Any suggestions?

FSLogix setup question

Currently we are running Windows Server 2016 RDS with User Profile Disk. We are looking at installing FSLogix so we can do cached Outlook mode with indexing and OneDrive.

If we install FSLogix Office 365 User Profile Containers what happens to the current User Profile Disk? Do we just point the containers to where they are located and it works without issue? Or does it create a new User Disk for the users?

Thank you

Unable to launch published applications from RD Web Access

I am unable to launch published applications from RD Web Access on one client cpu.  The client cpu has a 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise (SP1) operating system.  The RDS server has a 64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system.  The applications appear after initial web login, but they do not launch when clicking on them.  Task Manager on the RDS server does not show an active session for that client computer.  Running different IE browsers do not solve the issue.  I have also signed on as a different user on the client cpu and still have the same problem.  Any suggestions?

Black Screen on Windows Server 2016 RDS

Running Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Services (session-based desktops).

Multiple session host servers, one DC, all running as VMs under Citrix XenServer 7.1. The servers are fully updated to present time as of 7 March 2019.

Every few days a user reports that after logging in to an RDS session he does not see his desktop but sees a black screen. When this happens, I can see that some users on that same RDS server still have their session working normally, but every user logging in after this also gets this black screen.

There are numerous references to this problem on the internet. It is apparently occuring since Server 2012 and has never been fixed.

Some people recommend to restart the Windows Audio service. Does not help in my case, never does when it happens to me. Other recommendations were to remove Firefox browser from the RDS session host servers. I did that two months ago and it seemed to help for one week but then it came back. I have not found any other recommendation - there seems to be simply no solution, except restarting that RDS session host server, which is a major inconvenience, it throws out the other users which still work, it takes 10 minutes or more to restart that server, and it can only be done manually. Most often it has to be force-restarted on top of it, as the server is totally unresponsive, and then some users may loose their user profile. Then I have to delete that user and recreate his user profile. Major trouble.

In the last few months I have rebuilt all RDS session host servers from scratch - total new installation, all updates, totally clean. It STILL happens. I have that system running since 2 years, and it has been a problem all the time.

When I try to log in to the console of the offending RDSH I can sometimes not even log in . Sometimes it does let me log in but I also get a black screen as local admin user (both Server\Administrator and Domain\Administrator). In this case, I can bring  up TaskManager via Ctrl+Alt+End and run a command prompt. I can restart services this way and execute other commands, but anything relating to the UI does not show up. Screen stays black.

Managed once to get the black screen off by restarting ShellExperienceHost service but then this logged out all users somehow and corrupted some profiles.

The only applications installed on the RDSH servers are Chrome browser, Thunderbird email client, Libre-Office.

From what I can find on the internet this problem occurs since the release of Windows Server 2012. This is seven years ago. I do not know if this happens to everyone, but there seems to be no common denominator from what I can find, it seems to happens on all sorts of environments, pointing to a bug within Windows Server itself.

From what it seems it is related to the new UI system implemented with Windows 8 (and Server 2012) because I can find no reference to this occurring with Server 2008. I have not run RDS on Server 2008 myself so I have no first-hand experience.

Is there ANYTHING I can do about this? It does NOT seem related to my setup which is really rock-bottom basic. Many users are reporting this as a dreaded issue they hope one day will be fixed by Microsoft.

Can it be related to the virtualization software? Anything having experienced that issue on bare-bone installs of RDSH servers? Any difference with Hyper-V VMs?

WHEN IS THIS GOING TO GET FIXED? THIS IS A PROBLEM SINCE 2012 - 7 YEARS!

I feel forced to start researching for non-Microsoft solutions for RDS type solutions because I simply cannot tolerate non-functional software. To the users it looks like it is me as admin who is not doing his job!

Will 2012 CAL works on Windows 2016 RD Licensing Server?

Hi Experts,

This project just dropped on our face and we need to prepare things fast.  One thing we need to confirm is this.  Will 2012 CAL works on Windows 2016 RD Licensing Server?  Client's new environment has a Windows 2016 RD Licensing Server and their old RD Licensing Server is a Windows 2012 with 2012 CALs on it.  If it works, we can migrate it this way, correct?  Please advise.

Thank you so much in advanced!!

Remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop client access licenses available for this computer. Please contact the server administrator

Hi All,

I have created a DC and I have 5 servers which have to be using RDS User CAL Licensing. DC is one of the 5 Servers that I have.

Now I have added all the machines to the Domain that I have created and also configured the Licensing Role as required, but now the servers are disconnected stating that it has passed the grace period. I have a User CAL License available with me. Below details are configured as per the requirement on of them

RD Licensing / RD Session Host / RD Gateway - All Servers

RD Connection Broker / RD Web Access - only on one server which is not a DC

I want to activate the license and make sure I have access to all the 5 Servers which are configured in the same domain.

Kindly suggest if any changes with the gpedit.msc is required or with the regedit which I presume shouldn't be done as I have a proper license available.

I would like to configure the existing mis-configuration to be corrected. Let me know what kind of details you need in order for me to get this fixed.

Hi,

All our win 10 1903 clients, immediately after been updated from 1803 to 1903 start repeating keystrokes in remote apps. Servers are 2012 R2. RemoteFX cannot be disabled on session hosts servers since that solution causes problems to some of the apps running. Any one facing the same problem ? Any solution?

Installing RDS on Server 2019

I currently have 2008R2 TS server. I have purchased new RDS cals for 2019 and a server license.

I have the RDS cals installed on the license server ok.

What roles do I need to install for RDS. I have selected the quick setup for RDS in Add Roles Features but this installed Remote Apps and Web Gateway.

I dont require these roles, I would just like a Sessions host server as it will be internal only for around 10 users.

Is this possible? Can the apps and gateway be removed?

Many thanks

Hi

Is it possible do what I asked above?  I have seen this TS/RDS matrix but it does not make sense?  Can the DEVICE CALS be migrated from 2008 R2 to 2016 or does the business need to buy newer licenses.  Either answer is fine, just need to know what the correct answer is.

RDP from browser via RD Gateway

$

Dear all,

  1. Initial data:
RD Gateway deployment (let assume that it is single instance, win2019server). Exposed to Internet
  2. Windows workstations with allowed remote connections option enabled

Currently access to workstations can be obtained via RD Gateway

Target goal:

Get users possibility to connect to their workstations from browser interface.

Preliminary investigations:

Need to add RD Web access service + Remote Desktop web client.

Could someone please advise is this scenario possible or not?

I want to make a stress on that I need to access from browser not to a published via remote apps applications but to workstations via full RDP session.

Thanks in advance!

RDS 2012 : Block non signed .rdp file client connection

$

Hi.

I know we can lock the user or computer to run only .rdp files with specific SHA1 thumbprint by using GPO.

What I need to know is: Is there any way to make the server accept connections only from signed .rdp files?

Picture:

Server SRV1 is ready to use, and clients download the .rdp file from RDWeb Access.

Cliente PC1 runs the signed .rdp file and is able to connect to server SRV1.

Cliente PC2 creates a .rdp file ( local rdp file, not signed )  to try to connect to server SRV1 using the same or different parameters from the original signed .rdp file and is NOT abre to connect to SRV1.

Is it possible?
