Cannot install Windows Internal Database on Windows server 2012 datacenter

Hi all,

We've implemented a windows server 2012 as domain controller. For some reason, we install the Remote Desktop service on this DC. The RDS service: gateway, license can install without any error; however, we cannot install the Remote Desktop Connection Broker, every time we install this role, the error message display: The request to add or remove feature on the specified server failed. Then we try to install the Windows Internal Database first (required when install Remote Desktop Connection Broker), but the error also same. After I do the research, add the accounts IIS_IUSRS, NETWORK, NETWORK SERVICE, SERVICE to the Log on as a service policy, but still cannot install. And we check on the Event Log, the error message as:

moving from 2003 TS to 2012 RDS, will older thin clients still work?

We have some older HP thin clients from about 2007, with I think RDP 5.2 which are still working well with an elderly 2003 TS

Will we be able to use them with RDS 2012?

Does anyone have a link to minimum client spec for RDS on 2012?

Printer Re-direction Fails

Hi

If anyone can suggest something in regarding this

I have an issue with my RDS server, the printers will re-direct on a handful of machines

But there are 3 that i know of, the re-directed printer comes up with error 1111

Normally that would mean the driver is not located on the server, but I know that it is there and have checked several times

I have tried switching from PCL to PS drivers, New and older version of the driver and even a INF file to assist in names on the driver

Also use Universal drivers as well, even tried the easy print driver

My clients are connecting from Wyse Thin clients to a Windows Server 2008 R2 device

I have 2 of these servers both configured exactly the same, same printer drivers and everything

Both servers are Virtualized servers hosted on VMware, the connection from the clients is over the internet

Despite this one will work fine the other will not, no matter what i do

All of a sudden my Windows 7 x64 computer is unable to connect to random Windows 2008 R2 servers via Remote Desktop.

I can connect to the same servers from other Windows 7 machines.

The only fix I've come across so far is this, except that key doesn't exist on either my machine or on the server(s):

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Registry Editor.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TermService\Parameters
  3. Under this registry subkey, delete the following values:
    • Certificate
    • X509 Certificate
    • X509 Certificate ID
  4. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the server.

Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'm at a total loss what is happening here.

Thanks.

Almost deadend: creating virtual desktop collection fails due to template export location permission issue

Server 2012 Standard

Event source: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-TSV-VmHostAgent

Event id: 5121

Event log details: "Remote Desktop Virtualization Host could not export the virtual desktop named RDS Master Win8 Ent x64 to the specified location C:\RDVirtualDesktopTemplates\RDS-Win8-64-Pool\IMGS\__1.

Virtual desktop name: RDS Master Win8 Ent x64
Virtual desktop export location: C:\RDVirtualDesktopTemplates\RDS-Win8-64-Pool\IMGS\__1
Hresult: 0x80070005"

I have configured the folder with full permissions for RDS endpoint servers and domain users; the same configuration worked fine with another 2012 RDVH server but not this one.

Looked around and found nothing helpful... running into dead end...

Please share comments/ideas if any?

Thanks,

Leon Li

Register.exe on Server 2008 R2

Can I apply register.exe on Server 2008?  I know it is no longer shipped, can I use a Server 2003 register.exe and would the below apply?

From Article ID: 321701

Note that a program's registration data is recognized only when the program is installed. If you use theregister command for a program that is already installed on the server, the changes do not take effect until the next time that the program is installed.

Remote Desktop Services sessions are not kept alive as expected in Windows Server 2012

(W2K8 R2) Workgroup RDS Session Host and AD domain RDS License server

I have a Windows 2008 R2 RDS License Server that is domain joined with domain scope.
Also I have a Windows 2008 R2 RDS Session Host which is a workgroup server in a DMZ set up to serve using device CAL's.

Traffic is not being blocked by the firewall.

I specified on RDS Session Host to use the License server for issuing licenses and have no errors whatsoever. Diagnostics are run with no errors. User of Device CAL's are not being issued for the users or devices connected to the host.

So my question will be: Can I use license server that is part of AD domain for issuing licenses to a session host that is part of an workgroup for User or Device CAL's?

I read different answers on few forum's stating it will work with Device CAL's but I will need to know for sure.

Slow COM port redirection when using Remote Desktop Gateway

Hi,

We're using scales in our Terminal Server envirement (2008 R2 SP1). These are connected with COM ports to the Thin Clients (Windows 7, RDC 8 client) and redirected to the Remote Desktop Session. This is working fine on the local network. But when we try the same over a WAN connection using the Remote Desktop Gateway, it's working slow. It takes about 13 seconds before the wieght is displayed. On LAN it takes about 3 seconds.

We also tried to connect the network over a PPTP connection and then connect to the Terminal Server. This is also working fine.

So, has this something to do with the encryption?

Local cache location redirected printers

Hi there,

Does someone know the location where the redirected printer settings are stored on the client machine? (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243942)

Default the paper size is set to letter on newly added redirected printers. Changing the "Language for non-Unicode programs" to "Dutch", the default paper size for newly added redirected printers is set toA4. This is what we want.

But because for some users the settings are cached locally, this setting is not set to A4.

When we know the location where this cached data is stored, we can remove them and let the server reconfigure the printer with the correct settings.

Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because your password has expired or you must change the password

Hello,

I am having an issue with clients trying to connect to RDS session host servers via RDP, when their AD account passwords have expired, or have been manually set to be changed at next logon.

The clients are Windows 7 SP1, the RDS servers are 3x Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (2x Session Hosts, 1x Gateway server)

The clients receive the following message when attemting to log on via rdp:

"Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because your password has expired or you must change the password. Please change the password or contact your network administrator or technical support for assistance."

After searching the technet forums, I found the following thread:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverTS/thread/c45d8f1d-13f9-490c-9911-7ed9e7859276

The suggested hotfixes have been applied to both client, and session host servers.

The security layer has been lowered also, as suggested in the thread.

Neither of these fixes work in our environment.

Can someone advise if there is an actual fix for this issue, as this is real problem for RDS users ?

Thanks

Matt

AWS Remote Desktop Services Licensing

$

Greetings! This is my first to post, so please bear with me.

Here is my scenario:

My company has a number of Windows servers (company-owned hardware & OS licenses) in a server farm. My company has purchased User & RDS User CALs for all employees to be able to RDP into each server. Server licenses & CALs are all retail purchases, no Volume Licensing, no Software Assurance.

The company has also purchased a VL w/SA Microsoft Office w/100 seats. I have installed Office on our servers for our users' use.

I know this configuration is compliant with Microsoft's License Agreements as we own the hardware and directly purchased the licenses.

However, in addition to the server farm, my company has an account with AWS and wants to create several multi-user (via RDP) servers. Also, my company wants to install Office on the servers for our users.

Here is my problem:

I cannot find clear concise documentation from either Microsoft or AWS confirming the licensing requirements for my AWS scenario.

I've found many blogs saying one could use the regular User/RDS User CALs purchased via VL or Retail.

Alternately, I've found several other blogs talking about User/RDS User SALs (Subscriber Access Licenses) as the requirement since Windows is licensed from Microsoft via AWS through SPLA (Subscriber Provider License Agreement).

Are SALs included in my monthly payments to AWS? Where do I buy SALs? Does anyone have official documentation from AWS on this topic? The software vendor from which I purchased my company's VL Office has never heard of SALs.

Additionally, I have not been able to find clear documentation regarding the use of Office on an AWS Windows instance. I know AWS supports LM (Licensing Mobility) for users with certain Volume Licensing agreements but LM only applies to Server Applications. Microsoft Office is a desktop application.

Where can I buy Office for AWS instances? How do I license my users to be able to use Office on an AWS instance?

I've contacted Microsoft and was redirected to AWS. I've contacted AWS but no one seems to know the answers. Is no one else asking these questions? Is no one else using AWS Windows-based servers in a multi-user environment over RDP?

Any input on this topic would be very much appreciated.

Lossy Audio when you RDP into Server 2012 R2

I recently decided to take the risk to upgrade my Terminal Server to Windows Server 2012 R2, to find out that what I worried about, came true. My audio applications have become Lossy via RDP, you can actually hear artifacts when playing audio. In Windows Server 2012, the audio was PERFECT, lossless and as if you are using the audio application on the computer. In fact, this was the BEST thing Microsoft has done with RDP for Windows Server 2012- improving the sound quality DRAMATICALLY via RDP. I know that RDP isn't designed for listening to music or viewing multimedia, but they honestly have changed that in Windows 8 and Server 2012. Seriously, they did.

So my question would be- How do I DISABLE audio compression via terminal services on Windows Server 2012 R2, or do I have to go back to Windows Server 2012 which would honestly be a hassle being that I need to reinstall my terminal server? Otherwise, how do I deactivate my copy of Windows Server 2012 R2 so that I can reuse the license key?

Or if there is no solution, this issue needs to be reported to Microsoft for us to at LEAST disable bandwidth consumption and multimedia streaming compression and restore back the RDP audio capabilities that we had in Windows Server 2012.

Why can't I pin network shortcuts to the taskbar?

$

Simple scenario here:

2 RDS Servers, load balanced

Start menu is redirected to a network share

Users can't pin their programs to the start menu or the taskbar.

Now; first of all, this is completely moronic. The LINKS are on a network share, the APPLICATIONS aren't. Still I can't pin, not even after I start the applications.

I know there are workarounds, but none of the solutions I've seen are even remotely doable in an RDS environment with 100 users.

Seriously, is there no way to make this work?

problems with license server

We recently had help with setting up a license server for Remote Desktop. This server works fine, but we can't get other machines to use the server's licenses.
When we rdekstop to the client server, we can only access it 2 users at the time indicating that the client server doesn't find the licenses on the license server.

We have tried to configure Group Policy so the client knew exactly where the license server was, but that didn't work.
We have also tried to confiure it through the Server Manager, but that requires a Domain controller, which we don't have.

any ideas to get this working. how do i make a RDesktop server read it's licenses from another server

Terminal Server Session Freezes/Hangs

$

Hi,

Just a little background info, I have a terminal server farm running Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise behind a hardware load balancer and I am utilizing the session directory service.

The issue I am running into is users’ terminal sessions will freeze up when they reconnect to their existing session. There are two scenarios that this happens. When a user moves from one desk to another and they log into the terminal server and reconnect to their session or after a period of inactivity their session will lock them out and then they log in. All the user gets is usually only a partial display or just the desktop backgroup and the session doesn't respond. I used to just kill their session and have them log back in but now I have narrowed it down to the OUTLOOK.EXE process. If I log into the server they are on and kill their Outlook process their session starts to respond. I have noticed that Outlook will be utilizing 2% to 10% CPU when it is occurring. We are running Office 2010. It seems to be random and very frustrating.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
