VPSACE NCOMPUTING - Thin Client users

We are running windows server 2008 R2 - we have a virtual environment using Ncomputing devices - VSPACE hypervisor. We have an HP Photo smart printer 8050 which has card reader ports. The Photo smart printer is connected via usb  to the thin client device. Server recognizes the device but we get an error across all virtual units hard disk missing, we get this four times which is the number of card reader ports on the HP printer.

Under device manager we see :

Portable Devices
WPD File System Volume Driver    with a yellow exclamation point

This device cannot start Code 10

Location = UMBus Enumerator   - Portable Devices WPD FileSystem Volume Driver

Looks like server 2008 is not seeing the card-readers properly hence the WPD error.

I am having trouble finding anything on HP's site as far as a specific driver for server 2008

any help is appreciated, it is driving everyone crazy, one more note, users not on the Thin Client environment are not receiving the messages.  (standard pc connected users)

Visio for RDP exists?

Hi,

I'm wondering if Visio for RDP environment has ever existed.

Actually, I have a server in Windows Server 2003 R2.  I had tried to install Visio 2007 few years ago but failed.  And I tried to install Visio 2010 and still failed -- I have this message:

I have downloaded every ISO and EXE format of every edition of Visio 2010 that I can find in MSDN subscription area but none of them can be installed.  So I'm wondering ifVisio for RDP (ie Terminal License edition of Visio 2010) has ever existed!?

Anyone managed to have it and installed?

New RDS 2012 build (coming from a Citrix guy)

$

So I am a Citrix guy here and looking for some suggestions for a build using RDS 2012R2. I have inherited a mess who currently has 180+ connecting to 3 different terminal servers (also the domain controllers, haha!) We are looking to build something new from the ground up with the ability to grow to 300 or so users. We have 2 beefy servers and a SAN in a VMware environment so hardware wise we are okay just trying to think how to build RDS to accomplish a few things. I am thinking of going with 2 x Windows 2012R2 DC’s (likely add a 3rd as we start to get around the 225 user range) 2 x File Servers with DFS (I want to store profile stuff here) & 3-4x RDS hosts to start with (the only application they run is DOS based and super lightweight) I would then run the RDS gateway likely 2 of them as well (for failover/load balancing)

Question #1, should that be enough? I know the terminal servers sound a little taxed but I think with what they run application wise, should be fine.

Question #2 with the RDS gateway can I load balance users across the various servers if using roaming profiles/folder redirection? (I am used to using Citrix Profile Manager) I want the users to log off and all profile information go back to my DFS store.

Questions #3 we are also looking to create some type of internet browsing sandbox where users can browse as they please. I have seen this done with Citrix and persistent desktops that were destroyed when the user logs off. That will be expensive for us so we are looking to do something slightly different. Can I publish/stream an internet browser within a user’s RDS desktop session and have it somewhat contained? I know anything the user downloads to the desktop session could cause issues, but likely we will block the ability to download to prevent that.

RDP Connection Bar resize on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Hi.

Some time ago i accidentally discovered that it is possible to resize Connection Bar when doing RDP connection using mouse and "click-and-drag technology". I've mostly use Windows 7 -> Windows 2008 R2 conecctions if this matter. This feature is useful to shrink Connection Bars when doing multiple nested RDP coneections.

So here is the question: some Connection Bars are not resizable. Is it because of RDP nesting level, or OS settings or something else?

I've tried to search Internet, but seems i am the only person to resize Connection Bars in nested RDP sessions :)

Thanks.

Client VM RDP Certificates in 2012 R2 RDS Farm Virtualization Host Environment

$

How do you stop an RDP Session self-signed certificate warning from popping up when connecting to pooled VMs running in an RDS Virtualization Host environment?

Scenario is test using all 2012 R2 servers and RDS deployment. Certificates in use are internal CA and have added root cert from CA on all clients being used in the testing environment (domain-joined and non domain) to get past the usual cert issues with RD Web Access, RD Broker connectivity, RD Gateway... etc. However, cannot seem to get past the RDP session popping up a cert warning when connecting to a VM. The warning is related to the self-signed cert on the VM which in this case is Win7 Pro.

Basic entry to VM is going through RD Web Access and selecting the collection named associated with pooled Win7 desktops deployed on a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Virtualization Host.

Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

Migrating roaming profile from Windows 2000 TS to Windows 2008 R2 RDS

$

We have one TS running on Windows 2000. There are over 200 TS users. We are planning to migrate it to Windows 2008 R2. What's the easy way to migrate the roaming profile? Base on this article

Generally, user profiles that you create for users in Windows 2000, ... Server  2003 roaming user profile on Windows Vista or on Windows Server2008. ...  These methods migrate the roaming profile data to the new Version 2 user profile  format ...
support.microsoft.com
support.microsoft.com/kb/947025

There are two methods to migrate roaming profile. "Method 2: Use the Folder Redirection feature to share data between Version 1 and Version 2 user profiles" doesn't "migrate the desktop settings and preferences such as wallpaper because of the differences in the operating systems". That isn't for us.

"Method 1: Use the User State Migration Tool to migrate profile data to the new format (Windows Vista Only)" is recommend that you the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to migrate profile data in the following scenarios:

  • You do not use roaming user profiles or folder redirection.
  • You want to enable a more full-featured migration of user profile data from Windows 2000-based or from Windows XP-based systems to Windows Vista-based systems.

Note The User State Migraton Tool will not function on Windows Server 2008.

So the method 1 doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Remote Desktop only works from Intranet

$

I am having a devil of a time getting Remote Desktop to work from the internet.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 machine configured as a web server, dns server, active directory server, print server, file server and remote application server (don't really need that last one, just hoped it would make a difference - it didn't).

I have a fixed IP address.  The IIS home page comes up when I go to the fixed IP address.  The HTTP, HTTPS and Remote Desktop 3389 ports are open and forwarded by the router.  When I log into the 192.168.1.3 (fixed IP of the server on the LAN), it works no problem with administrator or any of the remote desktop users I configured (I had to much with the remote desktop group because some permission it needed had been disabled because the machine was also a DNS server).  I get access denied after logging in - it looks like it's working; the screen comes up with the remote desktop widget at the top and then it says access is denied and kicks me out.

I tried changing the port, no dice.  I tried turning off the firewall entirely, no dice.  I read online again and again, no dice.  The log files are unenlightening, something about lsass.exe the login service not having some permission.

I don't think it's my ISP (embarq), or the firewall.  I think its some esoteric windows 2008 r2 security permission thing, or some registry setting.

Tracking Logins, and Logouts

I am looking for a way to track logins and outs on our RDP servers. The security log will show the Logins for sure, but are hard to find. I can even have an app record something in the background on login via app or scheduled app etc. The problem comes with logoff. There does not seem to be a clean way if the user never actually logs out of the machine i.e. is disconnected and terminated because of session inactivity. Anyone know a way to trap these?

Remote Desktop Print Sessions

Hi,

I migrate from Windows 2003 Terminal Server to Windows 2012 R2 RDS.  Before we had the option to login as an administrator and see the redirected printers from all the remote sessions, and even print to them.  I haven't found how to do that in WS2012 R2 RDS.  Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

RDS VM's crashing 0x50 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Hi,

We have a new Dell R820 running Server 2012 Std as a Hyper V host, with 6 Server 2008 R2 Std VMs. 2 of the VM's are RDS servers, one with 25 users (RDS1) and the other with 10 users (RDS2). Since go live approx 3 weeks ago, the 2 RDS VM's have been crashing. RDS1 approx once a week and RDS2 approx 2or 3 times a week. Some crashes will leave a dump file, other crashes will not. From initial look at the dumpfiles, I have the following info:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50)
Invalid system memory was referenced.  This cannot be protected by try-except,
it must be protected by a Probe.  Typically the address is just plain bad or it
is pointing at freed memory.
Arguments:
Arg1: fffff680003b9268, memory referenced.
Arg2: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation.
Arg3: fffff800016f2dbc, If non-zero, the instruction address which referenced the bad memory
 address.
Arg4: 0000000000000002, (reserved)

They have referenced aAcentral.exe (a program from our Practice Management software APS), chrome.exe twice, and iexplore.exe.

None of the other VM's (2008 DC, file/print, mailserver, sql server) are crashing, just the 2 RDS VM's, which restart themselves, then users log back in, obiously losing any work they had open.

Can anyone help me out as to the cause and how to stop it?

Remote-App lost focus / Screen/Window jumping

Hi everybody,

we have a new Terminal Server with Remote-Apps and a very interesting problem.

Host: ESXi 5.5

Guest: Windows Server 2012 R2

Remoteapp: CAS (not importend, all Remote-Apps have the problem)

Client-OS: Win7 and Win 8.1

Now the problem:

A Remote-App is started on a client - this works fine. The Remote-App opens a lot of windows (new mail, customer informations and so on) and it happens that the active windows lost the focus and jumps into the background and another windows is in front with the focus.

The problem is not reproducible and with this caution it is not possible to work with the Remote-App.

I found following hotfix (http://support.micro...b/2964832/en-us) but it is not applicable to the clients.

If somebody needs additional information, i will be available.

Thanks for your help and time!

Kind regards

Session 0 desktop closes rdp session

hi everyone,

I have a problem while using the session 0 desktop on a cloud server based on windows 2008 server via RDP.

The rdp session to the server is canceled while being in the session 0 desktop and do not work actively at the system. I have some services runing, which display many cmds and sometimes i need to watch them while they are working. But after about 1 minute without using the mouse in the rdp session,  the rdp session is closed. But when I am at the session 1 layer, this do not happen. I need the conf.ini or something similar where i can administrate the "no working" time before the system is kicking me from the server.

Thanks

Connecting a WTOS client to a RD Collection

$

I may be overthinking this(or completely lost). So we have our Server 2012 R2 hyper-v hosting a few VMs. One VM is the Remote Desktop Server(Has web access, gateway, connection broker. Licensing is on the DC). Everything works fine and from a domain joined thick client running windows 7 I can open IE and navigate to https://gateway.it-test.local/rdweb . I am prompted for the RD Web Access login then can launch my desktop collection we created.

I want to connect a thin client running WTOS 8 now. Is there anything additional to configure besides just pointing it at the RDS server? Or is it as simple as dropping in the server for the RDP. (In the connection settings just enter host name or IP, username, password, and domain name.

Does this utilize the collection created or is this just going to just be a generic RDP connection to the RDS server? How does it know to use what collection since you can have multiple ones? In my instance it will only be one collection though.

Thanks,

RDP MaxBandwidth key

$

Hello

We use some sort of dictation software ,users are logged into the terminal server at the remote sites when they listen audio and when it is  choppy and jittery we would edit /alter the MaxBandwidth value for your RDP connection by changing this registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\Terminal Server\RDP MaxBandwidth: 0x000056b9 (22201)

This was working well in 2003 but since moved to  2008 R2 we were not able to find mentioned registry setting and to alter audio quality.

Does anybody know if there is similar key in W2K8 R2 registry?

We already tried with audioqualitymode entries but this did not give desirable results as mentioned registry settings

Thank you

RDS Farm with Win 2012 R2 – Error: “The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login”

$

I deployed a RDS Farm with Windows 2012 R2 (with Add Roles and Features, Remote Desktop Service Installation, Standard Deployment, ...)

Server 1 -> Session Host + Web Access
Server 2 -> Session Host + Web Access
Server 3 -> Connection Broker

I configured a session collection and authorized the users for it. The users connect to the web access (using IE), they see the remote apps.

The problem begins after the selection of a remote app (clicking on the icon). A rdp client window pops up, containing the connection broker as target – which is fine I guess, as the initial connection is supposed to target the CB – this rdp connection ends with the error “The connection was denied because the user account is not authorized for remote login”

The rdp connection tried to connect to Server 3 (connection broker), the users are not member of the remote desktop user group on the connection broker, therefore the error.

To avoid this error I can include the users in the remote desktop users group on the connection broker. Then it works fine: the connection broker redirects the session to one of the session hosts, where the desired remote app is executed.

But do the rds users have to be a member of the remote desktop users group on the connection broker?! I can’t belive that, then the users could use a rdp connection to connect directly to the connection broker – that doesn’t sound right to me…

Does anybody know how I get a redirection to a session host using web access WITHOUT tampering with the remote desktop users group of the connection broker?

Thanks in advance.
