RDS 2012 R2 VDI Pooled VMs AVHD Bloat

$

Good Morning,

I have an issue in a proof of concept scenario where my VDI Pooled VMs when left in an idle state start rapidly increasing in disk space. Is there a log I can view that can determine what is causing the bloat ?

We have limited storage space on CSV volume for the Proof Of Concept. I have been able to work the round the issue by using the Save State feature ideally I would prefer the VMs left in a running state.

Overview of the environment -

1 Broker

1 Web

1 Gateway

1 Licensing

1 RDS Virtualisation Host (VDI Pool storage via ISCSI Storage (Dedicated) for PoC)

VDI Pool Size - 50

VDI Pool Build

Windows 7 Enterprise

Office 2010

Normal Browser Plugins (Java \ Flash \ Shockwave)

Adobe CS 6

MIS App

Thanks in advance

Steve

RDS with Office 2010 Screen Rendering

Hi, we have a couple of issues with running Office 2010 on a RDS Server (Windows 2008 R2 with all hotfixes and patches applied).  What we are experiencing are the following:-

1).  User using Outlook through RDS, in their calendar if they try to drag a meeting or appointment to a time not showing on screen it starts to move the time then hangs, it will come back but after a long wait.

2). Similar to the above but in Word, a user opens up a Large Word Document and tries to highlight a large amount of text (a lot of it off screen) it begins to scroll then stops and hangs.

To me its like RDS cannot keep up with the screen the user is trying to display, has anyone else experienced this issue and can you recommend a solution?

Thanks

Chris

RDS VM's crashing 0x50 PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Hi,

We have a new Dell R820 running Server 2012 Std as a Hyper V host, with 6 Server 2008 R2 Std VMs. 2 of the VM's are RDS servers, one with 25 users (RDS1) and the other with 10 users (RDS2). Since go live approx 3 weeks ago, the 2 RDS VM's have been crashing. RDS1 approx once a week and RDS2 approx 2or 3 times a week. Some crashes will leave a dump file, other crashes will not. From initial look at the dumpfiles, I have the following info:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50)
Invalid system memory was referenced.  This cannot be protected by try-except,
it must be protected by a Probe.  Typically the address is just plain bad or it
is pointing at freed memory.
Arguments:
Arg1: fffff680003b9268, memory referenced.
Arg2: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation.
Arg3: fffff800016f2dbc, If non-zero, the instruction address which referenced the bad memory
 address.
Arg4: 0000000000000002, (reserved)

They have referenced aAcentral.exe (a program from our Practice Management software APS), chrome.exe twice, and iexplore.exe.

None of the other VM's (2008 DC, file/print, mailserver, sql server) are crashing, just the 2 RDS VM's, which restart themselves, then users log back in, obiously losing any work they had open.

Can anyone help me out as to the cause and how to stop it?

Onscreen Keyboard appears when shadowing session on 2012R2 Remote Desktop Session Host

As the title suggests, whenever I shadow a session on our 2012R2 RDSH server, the onscreen keyboard appears.  The taskbar also unlocks.

Both of these behaviours mean that the user can tell when their session is being shadowed, which I don't always want to be the case - sometimes I want to be able to monitor the session without their knowledge.

Anyone know how I can stop this from happening?

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - Remote Desktop Services

Hi Experts,

I was hoping someone would be able to provide me with some guidance.

We have recently purchased Windows Server 2012 Essentials as well as 5 RDP user CALS.

We do not have a domain or any other servers. We only require 5 people from various locations to be able to remotely log into the server and work on a program that is installed on it.

However, the setup and configuration of the Remote Desktop Services did not go as planned. After many attempts and various configuration settings, it still doesn't work.

What I am lead to believe is that the Essentials version of Server 2012 doesn't support being the RDP Gateway and License Server and Host. However, nowhere can I confirm this, I have searched many forums where people are experiencing the same problems, but nowhere can I find answers.

If there is anyone out there that might be able to shed some light and maybe point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards,

Wynand.

All remote desktop sessions in my farm collection are 0

Hi all,

We do have a RDS farm with 2 session host servers. I have created a collection.
The collection is working fine, however when I want to "shadow" a session I receive an error: The specified session is not connected.

However I am sure it is connected, because I am doing I tried it myself using a test account on a different computer.
Then I couldn't find much in the event viewer or whatsoever. Then I came to realize that all RDS sessions do have session id 0, I can see that from the server manager, as well as when I use the powershell command.

Anyone experienced this problem before?

Windows 2012 R2 printers showing twice (and unable to set default printer)

$

Hello,

I have a problem that will not just go away. I have two Windows 2012 R2 servers: one with RDS installed for 30 users with an appointment application and one "back-end" server were print queues and database are running.

So basically, users can connect to network printers by clicking on a link that points to the "back-end" server. In Windows 2008 R2, this is so simple but in Windows 2012 R2, I am experiencing tons of issues (with both V3 and V4 drivers). By the way, printer redirection in RDS (remote desktop) is disabled and forbidden by GPOs. I am listing the issues here to see if someone experienced them before:

1. After a disconnection between the printer and the RDP session (the servers are in a remote site as the printers are local and printing through a site-to-site VPN tunnel as they are all IP printers). Example: a power failure will set a particular printer at "offline", which is normal and eventually, it comes back online. But then, the problem starts: the printer "loses" it "default printer" status and none of the printers for a specific user are showing as default printer in his printer list. If I try to set again the desired printer to default, it is already "set as default" but the green "tick" is not showing on the printer icon and printing fails.

2.  When the above happens, I usually try to delete the printer from the user session and reconnect to it. But then, it is even worse: the specified printer is now showing "twice" in the list of "device and printers" for a specific user while working OK for another (when you right click the printer, you see two instances of it). This is interfering with our main application and a specific user session is non functional. A printer will also show in the "unspecified section"

3. Even a bigger problem: if I delete a particular printer from a specific RDS user session, the same printer disappears for all other users using that printer. So each time I try to fix a printer in one user session, I can expect a myriad of issues with the other users.

4. The only way I found to fix this issue (so far) is by rebooting both servers at the end of the day and after power recycling the printer exhibiting the issue. The only other thing I could try (never tried it yet) would be to delete the affected user profile and recreate it on the RDS server. But I do not know yet the consequences of that action (will everyone else lose the defective printer mapping as well???).

5. This issue doesn't seem to be driver or brand related as I had the issue with many printers of different brand. Both servers are virtual under Hyper-v (physical hosts are also Windows 2012 R2) and are running the latest integration version.

If anyone has experienced this issue, please let me know what you have to have done to resolve it. My next step is escalating this to Microsoft.

Thanks.

Benji.

Hello

I have problem to add session host server to a collection by Windows 2012 R2 environment. I can't find any GPO entry for that error. I have a subdomain conzept, if I do add the session host on the Gateway server which is located on ths top level domain, then I can add a session host server, but not when I do it on a subdomain. I can find some blog entry but all refer to Windows 2003.

Any input would be gratful

André

Here some more infos:

RDS User's files

Sorry in advance for another newbie question. So I've configured an RDS environment in Windows Server 2012 R2. I can navigate tohttp://test.domain.local/rdweb from any domain joined pc and login. I then launch my desktop collection I've created. Everything works great. BUT my question now is, where is the "home" folder or drive for this user? Is it the entire C: drive? is it just my user folder (documents, desktop, etc)? Is there anything else I need to configure to create a home directory or drive for each user or is it automatically created somewhere at the first login for each user?

NOTE: I'm not talking about a shared directory or anything, just the personal folder/drive that the user and any admins would be able to see.

Thanks!

Load balanced RD farm with 2 servers? Is this possible?

$

I was wanting to know if there is a way to create a load balanced RD farm with only 2 servers.  I know this can be done using a hardware load balancer (such as an F5 device), or can be done to a lesser degree through Microsoft NLB or through DNS entries and round robin access, but I was wondering if it can be done right through RD services on the 2 servers themselves.

Basically, the idea would be to have two servers, ServerX and ServerY.  Install the RD Connection Broker on ServerX, and then install RD Session Host on both ServerX and ServerY.  Is this even possible?

Certificate problems deploying Remote Desktop Services

I am having problems adding a self-signed certificate to the RD Gateway server.  I already have a self-signed certificate I created in the past for the Exchange server on the same domain.  I have a .REQ, CER and P7B file from this.  When I select to use an existing certificate in the Remote Desktop Services deployment wizard, it is looking for a file of the type .PKS.

I have looked at the Certificate Authority I have installed on the Exchange server and when I view the certificate details, the option to save/export the certificate as a PKS are grey out.

When I look at the SSL properties of my RD Desktop Gateway Manager, it tells me my self-signed certificate is installed.  I am at a loss here what to do as nothing works yet.

Thanks,

Create RDP file with saved usr/psw

Hi, I hope someone can help me.

I am creating .rdp files from my Win Server 2008. I copy those shorcuts into Motorola wireless scanners, so that they connect to my server and use the apps, etc, etc.

The problem is that everytime I open the file, it does not save my password but only the domain and user. I would like to know if it is possible to create the rdp file with the credentials saved.

Certificate RDS 2012

Hello,

I have a problem with certificate on RDS 2012.

I have :

2 RD Gateway
2 Connection Broker
2 Session Host
1 RD WebAccess

The url of gateway is : rdgwfrm.mydomain.ch
The url of ClientAccessName of the Connection Broker is : rdcbfrm.mydomain.ch
The url of my RD Webaccess us ; rdwa.mydomain.ch

I have an internal domain AD : corporate.lan

I have a wildcard certificate of mydomain.ch.

If i check the certificates states on the deployment properties, I have this :

All of the roles uses my the wildcard of mydomain.ch

I have set my wildcard for my RD Session Host with this command :

wmic /namespace:\\root\CIMV2\TerminalServices PATH Win32_TSGeneralSetting Set SSLCertificateSHA1Hash="Thumbprint"

First Problem :

Why my session host keep showing the internal certificat ? Do I need to assign my certificate manually on my servers ?

Second problem :

When I try to connect on my iPad with the official app , I have a certificate error. It's says that rdgwfrm.mydomain.ch doesn't match *.mydomain.ch. And same error for rdcbfrm.mydomain.ch. The wildcard is not supported on the IOS Apps ?

Thanks !

Gateway web access configuration

We have an RD Gateway server hosted at our Central Office. We have 6 other sites that have RD host servers. I’ve been on the gateway and been on the Remote desktop web access configuration and seen that there is a list of programs from each site showing. I’ve added a new program to one of the site but I can’t find if there is a way to replicate the changes or how to add the new program into the Web access on the gateway server? I’ve been looking into this but I can’t find any tutorials or support media on it.

All servers are running server 2008 R2

If anyone can either point me in the right direction or let me know if there is a default replication time I’ll be great full. If this is in the wrong thread, please move this or let me know where to move it to.

Thank you.

2 Separate RDS 2012 R2 Deployments in Same Domain ?

$

We have a current RDS 2012 R2 deployment. We are changing hosting vendors and want to completely redo the entire deployment (rather than try to migrated the VMs). What is the best way to go about this?

We do want to continue to use the GPO and user files will be migrated. How can we have the prod and dev RDS environments coexisting on the same domain?

Just to clarify, we do not want to use any of the existing infrastructure because it is all going to go away. Thank you!
