Host RemoteApp on Windows 8.1

I am using a laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro edition, and have the original Microsoft Surface RT.

I'd like to run Adobe Lightfoot on my Surface by setting up a remote app connection to the Windows 8.1 box.

I cannot even get Notepad to work.  The RDP RemoteApp starts, asks for my credentials, authenticates successfully .... then nothing.  I used the RemoteApp Tool for the GUI simplicity to configure my RDP files.  I noticed my event viewer security log shows me successfully logging in, then suddenly it logs me out.

Anybody familiar with doing this setup?

Windows 8/7 client cannot connect to RDWEB

Hi!

I have one strange problem with RDS 2012R2 and Windows 7/8 clients.

When we installed system, everything worked with external access through RDWEB.

Now after one month the external access stopped working, I can logon on /rdweb website and start desktop but rdclient says "Intiating Remote Connection" and is stuck here.

On client computer in event log I get schannel error 36887.

The strange thing is that I can connect with Ipad and Android device with RDClient App.

BUT I can also connect from Windows 7/8 through RDS Gateway.

I suspect that some Windows Update on client/server is mess this up, this is the only change in system.

Why does RDWEB not working? Anyone have ideas?

More details around RDS environment: 2 RDSH servers, 1 WEB/Broker/Gateway server, 1 Licensserver, 1 Fileserver (roaming profiles)

We use AlphaSSL CA - G2 Wildcard cert.

Terminal Server sessions in farm end randomly.

Hello,

We have just built 8 new Virtual Machines which we have added into our existing farm environment.

The Machines are running Server 2008 R2 and have one NIC, In the existing layout we have 6 Servers that have two NIC's one on a 10 range and one on a 172 range, these work fine, however the new servers disconnect from the Farm after a random amount of time disconnecting any users who are connected, the session remains open but the user has to reconnect.

The new Machines only run on the 172 range and the only slight indication of a problem I can see is that in the event logs we are being told that the machine has successfully left the farm and then 2 seconds later it has rejoined it.

We dont have any time restrictions set on the machines to disconnect  a user after a certain period but the existing machines with the 2 NICs say the same thing about leaving and joining the farm but only on the 172 range.

If anyone has any thoughts on what it might be that would be great.

Thanks

Connect RD Connection Broker to SQL

Hello I'm not being able to install RD Connection Broker with High Availability.

The RDS deployment consists on two servers running win2012

server1 - RDWA and RDG

server2 - RDSH and RDCB

The SQL server 2012 that I'm using is installed on server2 itself and had to be installed after the RDS otherwise the SQL installation failed and had to be done using the RD-install. It's working fine , I've applications that run on it.

As when configuring RDCB HA "both" RDCB hosts access directly to the SQL DB to create a new database, their accounts need to be authenticated as a SQL login with dbcreator role.

1 step: I checked a straight forward installation_

Installing and Configuring RD Connection Broker High Availability in Windows Server 2012

Failed

2 step: I checked an installation where my problem happened.

I checked RD Connection Broker HA – SQL Permissions
Added the host to a domain group and added the group as an SQL login, SQL authentication failed.

4 step: Google for how to create SQL login for a computer account and  I added it by executing:

“CREATE LOGIN [MyDomain\MyComputer$]FROM WINDOWS”

Also tried to use Add-ADcomputerServiceAccount without success.

3 step: I ended here

Taking a closer look at RD Connection Broker High Availability in Windows Server 2012

Where I verified that none of the following explanations were correct:

  • The SQL Server Native client is not installed
  • A firewall is blocking SQL Access from the RD Connection Broker (port 1433)
  • The incorrect SQL Server Native Client version is specified
  • An incorrect SQL Server name is specified

I tried several variations of the string to use but this is the one I think it's correct:

DRIVER=SQL Server Native Client 11.0;SERVER=WIN2012-1;Trusted_Connection=Yes;APP=Remote Desktop Services Connection Broker;Database=RDCB

The error registered on SQL is:

"Message
Login failed for user 'RDS\WIN2012-1$'. Reason: Could not find a login matching the name provided. [CLIENT: <local machine>]"

I tried to connect via ODBC with an existing username an it succeeded.

The problem seems to be with the computer account not existing as an SQL login...the thing is that it exists.

I need to set this up in order to be able to change the RDCB FQDN to a public FQDN.

How were you guys able to overcome this? Did you faced this at all?

Thanks,

David

RD Services 2012 change from Per Device to Per User

I am deploying a new RD Services 2012 server and purchased 25 Per Device CALs.  I realized that I should have purchased Per User CALs and I would like to know the procedure to change this before I go live.  Do I have to call the Microsoft License Clearing House first?  Do I use "Edit deployment properties" to change the licensing mode or do I also have to modify the local policy?

Thanks in advance

SSO

Hi All, I am having trouble implementing SSO. My environment: RDGW with RDWA ---> RDCB ---> 2 x RDSH. All servers are 2012 R2 and clients are a mixture of Windows 7 & 8.

Currently, users need only supply their credentials once to log into RDWA to launch a RemoteApp and "Connect to remote PC" from within RDWA prompts the user for authentication once.

I would really like to avoid users having to enter any authentication details from domain joined computers connecting from both internal and external.

I made changes to RDWG: %windir%\Web\RDWeb\Pages\web.config to enable WebSSO - it is documented clearly in the file how to enable Windows Authentication. [You must also enable Windows Authentication in IIS for Default Web Site. I also disabled Anonymous Authentication but perhaps this is not necessary.]

WebSSO works, however, every time a published app is launched the user is prompted for credentials. Also, "Connect to remote PC" prompts the user for authentication twice.

There is a lot of documentation relating to GP settings but it seems to apply to 2008 and 2008 R2. What else needs to be done to 2012 for a complete SSO solution?

Many thanks.

Remote Desktop Services in Winodws Server 2012

Hi guys.

I've a customer who wants to enable Terminal Services  (or RDP) for 5 users and right now he can only enable this for two since he is using the Windows Server Essentials.  My question is, does he need to migrate to the Standard Version to enable this for 5 users?   Does he need to purchase then the windows Server and 5 licenses for RDP?

Thanks for your help!

Using USB Devices in RDS VDI with Windows 8.1 Scenario

$

We are currently in a Upgrade Scenario from our old Windows XP/ Citrix XenDesktop Farm to a new VDI Installation. The new Installation is a Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Services Collection using Remote Desktop Virtualizaion Hosts on 2012 R2 too.
The VD- Clients are Windows 8.1 ENT and the User Endpoints are HP ThinClients with Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Enterprise.

The user connects to his Virtual Desktop via 8.1 Embedded (RDP8.1)

We want all new USB- Drives to map natively in the RDP- Session (RemoteFX USB redirect) so USB- Sticks or CD/DVD Drives are controlled by the VD-Client OS.
We understand, that there are so called "high level devices" which RDP is using per Default. We also know, that there is a GPO that redirects all "other supportet USB devices". That works well for e.g. Webcams, but we want to override the"high Level devices" policy an simply map a e.g. USB Stick natively to the RDP Destination.

Currently the drive is mapped as a "high Level usb device" and the usb key has no drive letter, cant be formattet or used in other RemoteApp Sessions initiated on the VD- Client OS.

The Systems we are using:

Windows 8.1 Enterprise - VD Client on HyperV 2012 R2 FO Cluster
Windows 8.1 Embedded Industry Enterprise as ThinClient OS
Windows Server 2012 R2 as Middleware (RDS VDI Collection, Web Access)

Thank you in Advance

RDP Connection Bar resize on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

$

Hi.

Some time ago i accidentally discovered that it is possible to resize Connection Bar when doing RDP connection using mouse and "click-and-drag technology". I've mostly use Windows 7 -> Windows 2008 R2 conecctions if this matter. This feature is useful to shrink Connection Bars when doing multiple nested RDP coneections.

So here is the question: some Connection Bars are not resizable. Is it because of RDP nesting level, or OS settings or something else?

I've tried to search Internet, but seems i am the only person to resize Connection Bars in nested RDP sessions :)

Thanks.

New RDS 2012 build (coming from a Citrix guy)

So I am a Citrix guy here and looking for some suggestions for a build using RDS 2012R2. I have inherited a mess who currently has 180+ connecting to 3 different terminal servers (also the domain controllers, haha!) We are looking to build something new from the ground up with the ability to grow to 300 or so users. We have 2 beefy servers and a SAN in a VMware environment so hardware wise we are okay just trying to think how to build RDS to accomplish a few things. I am thinking of going with 2 x Windows 2012R2 DC’s (likely add a 3rd as we start to get around the 225 user range) 2 x File Servers with DFS (I want to store profile stuff here) & 3-4x RDS hosts to start with (the only application they run is DOS based and super lightweight) I would then run the RDS gateway likely 2 of them as well (for failover/load balancing)

Question #1, should that be enough? I know the terminal servers sound a little taxed but I think with what they run application wise, should be fine.

Question #2 with the RDS gateway can I load balance users across the various servers if using roaming profiles/folder redirection? (I am used to using Citrix Profile Manager) I want the users to log off and all profile information go back to my DFS store.

Questions #3 we are also looking to create some type of internet browsing sandbox where users can browse as they please. I have seen this done with Citrix and persistent desktops that were destroyed when the user logs off. That will be expensive for us so we are looking to do something slightly different. Can I publish/stream an internet browser within a user’s RDS desktop session and have it somewhat contained? I know anything the user downloads to the desktop session could cause issues, but likely we will block the ability to download to prevent that.

Remote-App lost focus / Screen/Window jumping

Hi everybody,

we have a new Terminal Server with Remote-Apps and a very interesting problem.

Host: ESXi 5.5

Guest: Windows Server 2012 R2

Remoteapp: CAS (not importend, all Remote-Apps have the problem)

Client-OS: Win7 and Win 8.1

Now the problem:

A Remote-App is started on a client - this works fine. The Remote-App opens a lot of windows (new mail, customer informations and so on) and it happens that the active windows lost the focus and jumps into the background and another windows is in front with the focus.

The problem is not reproducible and with this caution it is not possible to work with the Remote-App.

I found following hotfix (http://support.micro...b/2964832/en-us) but it is not applicable to the clients.

If somebody needs additional information, i will be available.

Thanks for your help and time!

Kind regards

RDP MaxBandwidth key

$

Hello

We use some sort of dictation software ,users are logged into the terminal server at the remote sites when they listen audio and when it is  choppy and jittery we would edit /alter the MaxBandwidth value for your RDP connection by changing this registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\Terminal Server\RDP MaxBandwidth: 0x000056b9 (22201)

This was working well in 2003 but since moved to  2008 R2 we were not able to find mentioned registry setting and to alter audio quality.

Does anybody know if there is similar key in W2K8 R2 registry?

We already tried with audioqualitymode entries but this did not give desirable results as mentioned registry settings

Thank you

Remote Desktop Session Host USB Redirection with Windows 8.1

Hello all,

I've currently setup this environment (both OS/Client are fully up to date as of today). I am using one server as the Gateway, Web Access, Connection Broker and RD Session Host with one collection.

I am trying to get USB redirection setup to work properly. Some devices work (pen drives/iPhone etc), but other devices (we have a smart card reader we are testing that works natively on my Windows 8 machine) that doesn't appear.

I see conflicting information wherever I go on the internet on how to get this working. Some places suggest modifying the registry on the client machine, other places suggest you need to add a customrdpproperty to the collection.

What is the proper way to get this working on 2012 R2 with Windows 8.1?

Windows 7 w/ 8.1 RDP client error with 2012 RD Gateway

$

I've deployed a new RDS server w/ RD Gateway based on Windows Server 2012. Everything seems to be in working order on the server and its various roles. I've been testing internal and external access to the RD Gateway from both Windows 7 & Windows 8 computers using various web browsers. (frankly my whole reason for the new deployment)

Windows 8 computers seem to be working fine in IE, FireFox and Chrome although I will get prompted for credentials a 2nd time in Chrome and/or Firefox.

On my Windows 7 x64 PC I keep getting the following error when I launch the desktop from the portal:

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1) Remote Access to the server is not enabled

2) The remote computer is turned off

3) The remote computer is not available on the network

Make sure the remote computer is turned on and connected to the network, and that remote access is enabled.

Yesterday before I added the server to the RAS & IAS Servers I was logging Event ID 201 in the Terminal-Services Gateway log however those errors have subsided with the group membership change.

What have I missed here?

Thank you for any guidance on this!

Why is Total Licenses not equal to Available plus Issued?

$

We have a new Windows 2012R2 server and have just installed Remote Desktop Services on it.

We added some licenses through SPLA, Volume License And the Per User CALs show up in RD license manager.

But even though the Total Licenses number is correct, it says 0 Available, and 0 Issued. So where did our licenses end up?

When we connect now, it pulls a "Build-In OverUsed" License.

How do we solve this?

Thanks / Finn Bøgild

Question about RDS Licensing 2008 R2/2012

Hi All,

I'm looking for some assistance with RDS licensing in Citrix environment.

What would be the best way to configure RDS licensing in multiple untrusted domains and multiple RDS farms (we have one farm per domain and there are no trusts between them)? Most users have accounts in each of those farms.
Is it necessary to buy licenses for each RDS farm/domain since a single licensing server can't be used without a 2-way trust in place?
Can a single user license be used in multiple RDS farms within the same company?

Thanks

Server crashes when someone logs in.

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server, and every time someone logs in via Remote Desktop, or on the console, it crashes.  The only way to get it back is to power it off, and back on.

It will continue to ping, but, file sharing, and all network services (it is my Exchange server!) stops.  It never fully logs in, but stops at "Welcome."

We cannot trace it to any change.

It is a Virtual server on Vmware.  There are no events in the event log that point to why it crashes.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

RDP Application performance

$

We have a remote desktop 2008 R2 farm.  We have an application that we host on the farm which we can also access locally.  When users access the application remotely using RDP client they complain that it is slower than the local access.  We have increased the bandwidth for the remote access, the RDP servers are have plenty of RAM, processing power and network access(10GB NIC) to the database server.  However clicking between windows is not the same as on the local lan like there is some latency or something affecting it.  We have 30-40 RDP connections going across a 50MB fiber link.  What else can we do to increase the performance?

There are three servers in the farm.  Each has 64GB of RAM, 10GB NIC and dual-quad core CPU.  We do notice that connecting via Remote gateway web interface for RDP seems to perform better than the RDP client sessions over the fiber.

Load balanced RD farm with 2 servers? Is this possible?

$

I was wanting to know if there is a way to create a load balanced RD farm with only 2 servers.  I know this can be done using a hardware load balancer (such as an F5 device), or can be done to a lesser degree through Microsoft NLB or through DNS entries and round robin access, but I was wondering if it can be done right through RD services on the 2 servers themselves.

Basically, the idea would be to have two servers, ServerX and ServerY.  Install the RD Connection Broker on ServerX, and then install RD Session Host on both ServerX and ServerY.  Is this even possible?
