External Users can connect to RDWEB but Remote Apps stuck on Black Screen

$

I have an issue where some external users can connect to RDWeb but when they launch a remote app, the connection never completes. If you click "Show Details" the screen is black. Normally you would see the blue logon screen (loading settings, etc.).

This only happens for random clients. Others get in just fine. To test, I used a client account from home and everything worked fine. So it has to be something with their network. I suspect port 3391 UDP is not open thought I told their IT person that port 3391 UDP and port 443 TCP need to be opened.

I have tried all the usual stuff, making sure Windows is completely updated, RDP client is updated, disabling persistent bitmap caching, changing resolution, having the user click CTRL+ALT+END (nothing happens because the session isn't established yet).

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

4107 Error with RDS License server: "The Remote Desktop license server failed to query Active Directory Domain Services for user information.Win32 error code: 0x8007203a"

Hi everyone,

I seem to be having trouble with one of our RDS license servers. We constantly receive this error in the event log throughout the day:

Log Name:      System
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-Licensing
Date:          10/15/2010 2:55:54 PM
Event ID:      4107
Task Category: None
Level:         Warning
Keywords:      Classic
User:          N/A
Computer:      DC2.mydomain.Local
Description:
The Remote Desktop license server failed to query Active Directory Domain Services for user information.
Win32 error code: 0x8007203a

This machine is also a domain controller.

I've double checked and the server and the network service account are members of the TS Server group in AD. When I go into "review configuration" under RDS licensing it also says that is has the appropriate memberships. User CAL reporting seems to work as well.

Is there anything else that would cause error 4107? I can't seem to find anything else than group membership issue which doesn't seem to be the case.

Can Users Change Expired Passwords via RDP to Windows Server 2012 R2 / Windows 8.1 if NLA is Disabled?

$

Environment: Primarily Windows Server 2012 R2 servers and Windows 8.1 clients, with some older versions of Windows Server and Windows client

I understand that if a user's password has expired and they attempt to make a remote desktop connection (RDP) to a computer running Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1, and if Network Level Authentication is enabled on the remote computer, then the user is not allowed to change their expired password. Instead, they receive this prompt:

"This user account's password has expired. The password must change in order to logon. Please update the password or contact your system administrator or technical support."

However, even when Network Level Authentication has been disabled on all computers in our domain, users whose passwords have expired still get the above prompt when connecting via RDP to Windows Server 2012 R2 or Windows 8.1. I do not understand why we still receive this prompt even when NLA is disabled. Older versions of Windows still allow users to change their expired passwords in the RDP logon session.

I also understand that RD Web Access can be enabled as a workaround for this issue, but I first want to understand why users cannot change their expired passwords even when Network Level Authentication is disabled. Default Printer changes - Users terminal server

$

I have three 2008 terminal servers and they are 64 bit running fairly well.

We have some users that call up saying that there default printer keeps changing.

We have one local printer on all the TS's ... and that is PDF Creator, rest are network printers

So sometimes when they log into the TS their default printer changes to the PDF Creator.

It's not a printer on the 'local' computer so it's not being redirected
It doesn't happen all the time
I have made fully sure that they are logging off and not disconnecting the session.

any tips ?

changing the way we access remote app website

Hi

1. can we use http instead of https for remoteapp in server 2012 R2? We are using it a secured VPN and its now two layers of security and slowing it down.

 2. Is there any way that we force clients to use UDP over https for getting access to the RDWebAccess?

User theme appears to be randomly changing for no reason...? (with photos)

I've got about 20 users on a Terminal Server using Wyse T10 and C10 thin clients.  Odd thing is, the same user who logs in will see multiple themes though the day.  Basically they will log-on and see the win7 style start icon and such...then for no reason, the screen will flicker and show the classic start icon...then later it will switch back.  Other things such as the print menu's and IE web browser skins change too to match the classic or win7 theme.

See screenshots below.

Any idea's?  Should I focus on the wyse devices or the windows server to correct this?  We are running Server 2008 R2 with terminal serveries enabled.

Users dont have the abilty to change themes to my knowledge

How to Unassign or Removed an Assigned user from a Persistent or Personal Virtual Machine?

$

Hi,

I have about 20 users with 20 persistent VMs in RDS Hyper-V host. Each user is assigned to his/her own personal VM so she can have a custom desktop look. I would like to un-assign or remove a user, how?

Scenario: User Jessica's personal desktop "VDI-VM 2" has issues and I would like to remove her from the VM and assign her to "VDI-VM 21". I would like to keep VDI-VM2 for troubleshooting so I do not want to delete/remove it.

How would I perform this action?

Best,

Tuan

2012 R2 RDS Temporary Profile issue

$

I have set up a standard 3 node 2012 R2 RDS for testing. All virtualized on VMware ESXi 5.0. I have a connection Broker, session host, and web access server. I have published several applications and I can access them without a problem. Here is my issue:

When I try to log on to my session host server either locally or thru RDP, I am always logged in with a Temporary profile. It does not mater what user account I use. Even logging on locally as the administrator I get a temporary profile.

All windows updates are installed and current.

I have removed the server from the domain, deleted the account, and rejoined it to the domain.

I have deleted all .bak registry entries from here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

There is a hotfix here for a similar issue on 2012 but it does not apply to 2012 R2

The only event viewer errors are:

1515 (Windows has backed up this user profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backup profile the next time this user logs on.)

1511 (Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.)

Any suggestions to resolve would be greatly appreciated.

Very slow access to mapped local client drives (with RD Gateway)

$

Hi,

for our published applications it is necessary to save files to the mapped/redirected local client drives (Session Collection -> Client Settings -> Enable redirection for the following: Drives).

This is working, but very, very slow (i.e. for a small file < 1Mb it needs minutes!)

I have setup an RDS environment as follows:

  • One 2012R2Server (VM) for:
    * RD Connection Broker, Session Host, Gateway, Licensing, Web Access;
    * also RD Session Host for testing;
    * the server is within DMZ,      but has access to the corporate network (not Internet)
  • Several2012R2 Servers (VMs):
    * RD Session Hosts
    * within DMZ
  • Several2008R2 Servers (VMs):
    *
RD Session Hosts (found a description to publish also 2008R2 App on the 2012R2 RD Web Access Portal)
    * within DMZ

We thought about SSL, that this could be the reason or the certificate (but this looks good) or the AntiVirus software.

I read different articles about the Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses.

When I check the Bypass RD Gateway server for local addresses box I can save files on the normal way (fast). But then I have only this (normal) fast access within the DMZ. Outside the DMZ the access is still very slow. (Also in this case the normal users have no access, only the administrators. I still don’t know why. But this will be the next step.)

Then we thought that the way through two servers (RD Session Host and RD Gateway) could be the reason. However the file transfer of the published application from the RD Gateway Server is so slow, too.

I've run out of ideas.

So my question is:

Why is the file download so extremely slow, when the RD Gateway is involved and only the file transfer to the local client drives. The normal file transfer to the local server drives is fast. Also the rest of the application is fast. When I use the normal Remote Desktop Session (mstsc.exe) everything is also fine.

Thank you in advance for any help and hints you can give.

I find Win2008 has this on remote apps but not sure it can be on win2012R2.

May I know signle sign-on can let the user to use domain account for the remote desktop?

Thanks a lot.

Network Adapter tab error in Terminal Server

$

I configured the terminal services session to listen on only the internal network adapter on a W2k8 server with remote desktop for admin only.  Initially, it worked.  However, it degraded and stopped working altogether.  I attempted to  roll back the change but when I open the network adapter tab of the terminal session properties a message pops up stating:

"Terminal Services Configuration tool is not able to obtain the properties for this connection. the connection has either been deleted or the internal state of this connection has been corrupted. Please close all propery pages and select refresh from the menu."

Of course, selecting refresh doesn't help.  Restarting terminal services doesn't help. Disabling and reenabling the Network adapter doesn't help.  Rebooting the server doesn't help.  Any other suggestions would be helpful.

RDP Smart Card Logon. CRL Check.

Hello.

We have windows server 2012 R2 named RDP. On this server policy "Interactive logon: Require smart card " is enabled. Server is domain member. Also we have internal PKI. One Root CA and one Issuing CA. CRL is published on http web server. This CRL URL is available from RDP server. And smart card logon works fine.

I revoked user's certificate and published crl. But user still able connect to server. What do I need to do to user cannot to logging to RDP server after i revoked certificate? I tried run "certutil -setreg chain\ChainCacheResyncFiletime @now" on RDP server, but user still connect. Where checked CRL? On RDP server or on KDC? Maybe i need run this command on all domain controllers?

Access Denied When Logging onto a Terminal Server

$

I have a Terminal Server in a server 2008 environment that gives the error "Access Denied" when domain users attempt to logon to it including administrators. However I am able to access it with the /admin switch when I rdp into it. I was able to put a fix in place by modifying the registry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server" and adding  IgnoreRegUserConfigErrors as a new DWORD. However before that I had verified that the permissions where correct for the domain users and admins, disabled all GPO's. I even built a new Terminal server from scratch and got the same result. My question is would registry value cause any security issues? And I would like to look for a way to resolve the issue without the workaround if possible.

Terminal Server windows 2012 R2 does not render Desktop in Portrait if width

Hello

we are using Windows Enbedded Handheld 6.5.3 (with 240x320, 480x600 and 480x800 displays) Remote Desktop Mobile (RDM) to connect to Terminal Services on a Windows 2012 R2 server. If using RDM option "Fit remote desktop to screen" and starting a new session, the Start screen (Metro UI) is shown. Now starting a Desktop app like Control Panel or "This PC", the screen changes and only an empty background is shown. The Server renders the same, if set to start sessions in Desktop Mode.

If clicking or tapping the empty background the Start screen is shown again. The Terminla Server just does not render the desktop scren, the Desktop apps are started but not shown.

The same (empty background) happens if starting a new Remote Desktop Client session from a Windows 7 x64 or Windows 8.1 with the resolution set to 480x640 or 480x800 (width and height settings the RDP file). First I thought this is a general 'portrait' resolution issue, but the new session works correctly for 600x800.

I also tried Windows Phone 8.1 Remote Desktop and it does connect and render but always in landscape mode and I do not see an option to chamge the resolution used.

Is there any minimum limitation for portrait screens with Terminal Server of windows 2012 server? How can I workaround this, we need full screen display on the mobile devices.

Thanks for help

Josef

Hello, guys.

I am trying to get old style ts-web behavior, with the ability to get remote desktop inside the web browser.

Back in server 2k3 it was done using tsweb and activex control. How this can be done in 2012 r2?

I currently have 2 RDS servers alive and kicking, one of them holds remoteapps collection and the other i'm trying to configure to provide the mentioned functionality.

Any help will be highly appreciated

RDSH 2012 Intermittent freezing with ThinClient RDP version 8

$

We recently built a 3 node RDSH 2012 farm with a connection broker. We also started piloting test users on this farm. We are seeing the following strange behavior:

  • Connections with Win10 (RDP10) are smooth and working fine the whole day
  • Connections with ThinClients (RDP8) intermittently freeze and have a black screen but will recover after a few seconds or minutes

Has anybody else seen this before? We believe it is due to either the RDP8 or some settings in the mstsc console that will cause this. Before one by one checking all the available settings and possibilities I wanted to check with you to see if anyone experienced a similar issue and potentially has some advice.

Publishing Web application recommendation

Hi!

We have a hyper-v HP Server with Nvidia GPU which we need to use for publishing a web application on a VM. As per our knowledge it is not possible to assign GPU to VMs having Server OS. In this case we have two options, either we create separate windows 8.1 Enterprise VMs for every user who needs to use that application or we install the GPU on a separate physical server, install windows server OS and use Remote Desktop Services to let users use that application.

Which option is better and is there any other solution. The application is highly graphical and needs a good VGA. That's why we decided to let users use it directly on the server.

Thanks.

We're having an issue with UPD's not dismounting when a user is logging off of one of our two Server 2012 R2 based RDS boxes.

The UPDs are stored on a Server 2008 SBS box and the only error we can see is the one below:

DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XXXX using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID XXX (C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe)

I am having trouble finding any information on this error.  This is a Windows 2012 RDS server.  Every time a computer connects to it, i get this event in the System log.

Dcom 10028 -  DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer XXXX using any of the configured protocols; requested by PID      XXX (C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe).

The only issue that anyone reports with printing is that it is occasionally very slow.  Rebooting the server resolves that.

Has anyone seen this before?  It isn't a major problem, but i'm definitely curious as to what it is and how i might get rid of it.
