Server 2016 - VDI - UPD not detaching

I have server 2016 latest release installed and Win 10 Build 1607 guest VMs. I'm using profile disks. Intermittently the UPDs are not detaching causing the user to get a temp profile the next time they login. What is very interesting is the release notes of the most recent rollup, October 18, 2016— KB3192404 (Preview of Monthly Rollup) , for server 2012 R2 has the following fix for Server 2012 R2. I'm having this EXACT issue except in server 2016. I cannot find whether or not this is fixed in Server 2016 or not, but either way, i'm having this exact problem. How can I find out if this is going to be fixed in Server 2016?

This is the release note from KB3192404: Addressed issue where the user profile disk (UPD) does not get unmounted when a user logs off. Therefore, users get temporary profiles and are not able to work with their own profiles during their next logon. The Event ID 20491 with a description of “Remote Desktop Services could not disconnect a user disk for the user account with a SID of <SID>. The error code is 0xAA.93” will be logged.

Installation Problems (Expiry Date) for VDI Suite - RD Licensing Manager

$

I have purchased a VDI Suite Per Device Monthly Subscription under an Open Value license.  When I install using RD Licensing Manager I select "Other agreement" drop-down for Licensing program as that description includes Open Value.  I type in the required Agreement number and license count.

When I do this the licenses install but give an Expiry Date of 30 days from the date of the installation.  My license on paper says my license expires on 10/31/204.  Does anyone know if I am installing these incorrectly?  I checked with the reseller and Microsoft VLSC and they confirmed my expiration is 10/31/2014.

I prefer not to do an install every 30 days.

Thanks

Peter

Twice login and a Black screen

Hi,

I have configured RDS farm for windows server 2012 R2. There is a problem when connecting the the RDS virtual IP address. It prompts twice for login credentials. Second problem is that when any user tries to connect RDS from WIN7, there is a delay(black screen) in between this two login screen. Same RDS server connected from WIN8, it prompts twice for login but no delay in between.

Please could you let me know if this is a known issue and is there a solution available for this.

Thanks & Regards,

How to change password in RDP session

In my situation all RDP clients are remote over the internet. their passwords expire every 60 days. How can the user change their password before it expires? CTRL ALT DEL will not work because it takes you to a password change on your local machine. Note the users have no access to a desktop only a single application is forced to run through the user profile.

Deploying RDS 2012 R2 - ""Unable to install RD Web Access role service on server"

$

I spun up brand new 2012 R2 Core servers to be designated for a Connection broker, and one for Web access.

2 other 2012 R2 servers (full GUI) to be designated for Session Hosts.

From Server Manager on my Windows 8.1 system, logged in as my domain admin account, I am attempting to deploy standard RDS, assigning the roles in the wizard like normal, but after servers are selected and I click "deploy", it appears like it's in progress for a couple mins but then fails with the error:

"Unable to install RD Web Access role service on server "RDSWA01.cafenet.com".

So the RD Connection Broker role service status for server RDSCB01.cafenet.com is "Failed", and RD Web Access role service status is "failed".

my session hosts RDSSH01 and RDSSH02 are then shown "cancelled" by the wizard.

I have no anti-virus running on the servers.

My GPO for User Right Assignment for "Log on as service" has MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID added.

I am not sure what to do here to get it going....

any help appreciated.

Local Profiles upgrade from .v1 to .v2 /.v3

Hello,

My task is to replace old Windows 2003 R2 64-bit ENG TS [ Terminal Services ]
with new Windows 2012 R2 ENG RDS [ Remote Desktop Services ].

Is any method for smooth migration of local user profiles [ version .V1 ]
to new local user profiles [ version .V3 I suspect ... ] on new machine ?

Profiles are rather simple, no 3rd party software installed, only MS Office.
I don't want now to buy 3rd party migration tools.

I've read some previous posts and I know that's not easy task.

Perhaps:
1. Local upgrade from Windows 2003 R2 to Windows 2008 R2 then Windows 2012 R2 can upgrade these profiles ?
[ then upgraded profiles copied to destination server, registry changes etc. ]
or
2. ADMT [ Active Directory Migration Tool ] can upgrade profiles during migration ?
[ Users migrated to another domain, then migrated back ... ]

error on remote computer via external gateway server

$

Hello,

I administer a small Win2k12 RDS cluster of 5 hosts, 2 connection brokers, 1 gateway.

All Win7 or better machines connecting via current RDS 8.x client.

We recently started seeing this error:

1) gateway site comes up

2) log in successfully

3) work resources screen appears, shows Company Remote Session

4) click Company remote session item

5) error message appears, can't connect to remote computer etc.

Actual text: "Your computer can't connect to the remote computer because an error occurred on the remote computer that you want to connect to. Contact your network administrator..."

All the RDS hosts connect fine using RDS client, it is only the gateway that does not work.

Only known change is that the SSL/TLS certificate was updated on the gateway server itself last week.

I rebooted the gateway and connection broker servers, still same problem, RDS hosts are rebooted nightly.

Where and what do I look at to find out why this happens and how to fix it??

Thank you, Tom

Scrollbar and wrong size Windows Sign-in screen with legal notice

$

Within our company, there is a pre-login screen popup whenever logging on to a Windows 2012R2 server. This screen shows the company's legal notice and an OK button. Whenever you logon via RDS (MSTSC), the legal notice is hown full screen, so the blue background covers the entire screen with a legal notice text and an OK button in the middle.

When we initiate a remote session (read: Citrix XenApp 7.6 published application), this same screen is displayed in a resolution of about 580x480, only showing the left 75% of the legal text. Even worse: between that text and the large Windows Server 2012 R2 text on the bottom of that screen, there is a horizontal scrollbar. Before you have scrolled with that scrollbar using your mouse, it's impossible to enter or press OK and access your application. You actually have to scroll left and right first and then click OK to continue.

How and where can I influence this behaviour? I have already found out that changing the legal text to one word (via Regedit > legaltext has no influence of the mentioned behaviour. The text changes, but the scrollbar and small screen remain.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Start a program on connection isn't working on Server 2012 R2

Unable to get program to run at connection. Troubleshooting with c:\windows\system32\notepad.exe which opens successfully from command prompt

I started with a nested organizational unit, nested group, & nested group policy.
Example: Domain -> OU "remotes" (which contains group "remote-users") -> OU "noteusers" (which contains group "note-users")

When I was failing to get the program to run at connection, I thought the nested group was picking up something I was missing from the parent group, so I scrapped that and started over with the two organizational units separated.
Example: Domain -> OU "remotes" and Domain -> OU "noteusers"

Steps I’ve tried since separating the organizational unit:

  • Active Directory Users and Computers
    • Created organizational unit under domain
    • Created group within organizational unit
    • Created user within organizational unit
    • User properties:
      • Environment – Start program section filled out
    • Program doesn’t run on connection
  • Group Policy User Configuration
    • Edit group policy for organizational unit under domain

User-Group Policy Setting

State

Start a program on connection

Enabled (and program path filled in)

ALL other policy settings

Not configured

  • Also tried enabling setting on Computer Configuration instead of User Configuration. Didn’t work.
  • Also tried enabling setting on BOTH Computer & User Configuration. Didn’t work.

Default Domain Policy Setting

State

Allow log on locally

Added user groups

Allow log on through Terminal services

Added user groups

ALL other policy settings

Not configured

  • Program doesn’t run on connection
    • There is another Group Policy setting ‘Run these programs at user logon’, which functions correctly but it does not disconnect the session when the program is closed and does not remove the start bar/desktop.

Printer coming back 5 times

Hi,

We have a print server with a couple of Network printers. All shared in AD.

I renamed one of the printers, from lets say Printer_1 to Printer_2. All fine, the new printer is visible, users can use it, etc.

One day later Printer_1 came back on one of the RDS servers, but now 5 times!. We have two RDS servers in place.
On the Print server Printer_1 is not there.
In the registry Printer_1 is not there.
In ActiveDirectory i deleted the old printer Printer_1.
On the Print server AND on the RDS server i removed the Inactive TS ports.
Checked all GPO's, but none add the printer.
Checked Logonscript. Old printer has been changed to the new printer Printer_2.
Rebooted the servers (Print and RDS.
Checked Registry on the RDS server. In the connections part the printer is not there.

Of course i can find the old printer in the registry, deep down in it. But also on the second RDS server which doesnt have this issue.

When i delete the printers, they come back after 20 seconds, or when i log off and log on. Sometimes they are back when i logon a second time to the RDS server. So it looke like they are pushed? But from where? And why not on the second RDS server?

Anybody familiar with this happening? I am out of ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Andre

Access denied error

Hi,

We have 2008 server that we use as our terminal server. It has been working fine the past 5 years.

Today, if a user tries to login via RDP, they get access denied. This is either from inside or outside the server.

The strangest thing is that if I user a RDP app on my iphone, I can login fine with no issue. But using Microsoft RDP from windows 7 desktops and laptops, we get access denied for any user.

All services seems to be working fine. When I review the configuration, I see that the license server is registered in AD and part of the licensing server group in AD.

There was no recent change and was working fine till this morning. Again, I can access fine from my IPHONE RDP cleint.

I noticed that many of the licenses issues don't expire till a month from now and the licenses that have been issued are more that the available licenses. This never been an issue because we only have one or 2 users on it at a time.

Any idea what might be issue? We restarted the server but still no luck.

Thanks

Mac RDC Client: "You were disconnected....."

Hi,

We are getting an "You were disconnected from the Windows-based computer because of problems during the licensing protocol" error message with 2 different Macs trying to connect to various RDS hosts. Apparently many Mac users have encountered this problem and none of the suggested solutions work for us.

We noticed that this problem only occurs when OEM RDS CALs are used. Connecting to an RDS host where open licenses are used a connection is possible. Is this a coincidence? Can someone confirm this?

Getting error "the remote session was disconnected because the Remote Desktop Client access license stored on..."

$

Good Day,

We have now had this error message occur on three Windows 10 Pro clients when trying to run an Remote App on our Windows 2012R2 RDS Farm. We have fixed the error on the client by:

1 renaming the reg key HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSLicensing to .bak and then

2 running regsvr32 mstscax.dll

My question is why is this happening? We are not low on Windows 2012R2 licenses.

rds 2012 ssl certificates

In windows 2008 R2 rds, i was able to use one ucc cert with 2 SANs ( rds.domain.com and rdsfarm.domain.com) and it covers 4 session hosts farm without any cert errors. Now in windows 2012 R2 rds, I am using the same setup (rds12.domain.com, rds12farm.domain.com) and every time the client hits a session host, i get the "certificate is not from a trusted certifying authority." For example rds2.domain.com is obvious not in the ucc certs but this was not an issue in windows 2008 R2 RDS. So in RDS 2012, do i need a wild card certs or a UCC certs with enough SANs to cover all the session hosts?

RDP issues with smart card

$

I have a Windows 2012 Standard server that is not "seeing" the card reader from the PC when using Remote Desktop Connection. The PC operating system is Windows 7 and ActivClient on both. I have verified my PC RDC settings are set to pass the card reader, I have reinstalled ActivClient on the server and checked various configuration settings. The only thing I can find that might point to the issue is, the Smart Card service is set to "Automatic - Triggered", but it's not triggering/starting. I can manually start it, but it doesn't do anything.

When I start RDC on my PC, my PC sees the smart card and reads it, but when I get to the server logon screen it prompts me for username and password. When I switch to the smart card, it says "Connect a card reader". When I logon with username and password, ActivClient says "no card reader".

Thanks

Dear Sir,

Server4-FS2: Remote Desktop Session Host (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)

Server5-FS3: Remote Desktop Session Host (Windows Server 2012 R2, Std)

So, please suggest Is it RDS Issue.

Automating installing license server key pack on windows server using power shell

$

  • HI,

I want to  automate the following steps  after obtaining the license key pack id from the Remote Desktop Services Licensing Web site.

•1) "In the Install Licenses Wizard, on the Obtain Client License Key Packpage, enter the license key pack ID in the boxes provided, and then click Next. The RDS CALs are installed on your license server.

•2) On the Completing the Install Licenses Wizardpage, click Finish. The license server can now issue RDS CALs to clients that connectto a Remote Desktop Session Host (RD Session Host) server."

Is "unit32 InstallLicenseKeyPack( [in] string sLlicensKeyPackId, [out]uint32 KeyPackId) the right API to use ?

What is the use of the KeyPackIdreturned by the API ?
How to call this using powershell ?

    Thanks for the help
