Server 2012: How to configure VDI (RD Connection Broker?) to access AD using specific account

$

Dear collegues,

I'm currently setting up a Proof of Concept VDI lab, and stuck on a delicate moment. Googling didn't help.

I work for a large company with many local offices. In our AD structure, each of local offices has its computers and users in a specific OU. One of these users (OU Admin) has rights to create/modify/delete accounts within his own OU, and has read rights for the rest of AD.

While setting desktop virtualization, I've stuck being unable to set an account (OU Admin) to create/modify virtual desktops' computer accounts in AD.

Default config doesn't work for apparent reasons.

I tried this way:

Server Manager => Remote Desktop Services => Collections => Create Collection
Step "Unattended Settings"
Checked "Specify the distinguised name of the organization unit" and gave a name
Error text:
The RD Connection Broker server does not have access to add the virtual desktops to the Active Directory domain. Configure access by using the Active Directory page of Deployment Properties.

Going to Server Manager => Remote Desktop Services => Overview
Window "Deployment overview", Tasks => Edit deployment properties
Navigating to Active Directory
Still, there is no option to configure AD access account.

Any help would be most appreciable.

Thank you.

Host RemoteApp on Windows 8.1

I am using a laptop with Windows 8.1 Pro edition, and have the original Microsoft Surface RT.

I'd like to run Adobe Lightfoot on my Surface by setting up a remote app connection to the Windows 8.1 box.

I cannot even get Notepad to work.  The RDP RemoteApp starts, asks for my credentials, authenticates successfully .... then nothing.  I used the RemoteApp Tool for the GUI simplicity to configure my RDP files.  I noticed my event viewer security log shows me successfully logging in, then suddenly it logs me out.

Anybody familiar with doing this setup?

Allow users to connect to workstation from RDS HTML5 web client?

Hi Guys,

Wondering if there's anyway we can allow users to connect to a workstation from the new HTML 5 Web Client? From all my research and playing with the product, it seems only RD Session Hosts and Virtual Desktop hosts can be added to the portal. Seems like such a waste as we have this HTML 5 RDP client that would be perfect for our needs, except we can't publish extra RDP endpoints.

Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space.

I have a windows service that runs a VBScript that creates a Excel file to attach to an email.

When it runs i get the following error;
"Microsoft Excel: Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space."

We have experienced the issue on MS server 2012 R2 peviously and were able to rectify the issue by creating a folder called "Desktop" int the followoing directories;

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile
C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile

The folders are required to store the temporary excel file while it is being created and build by the VB script.
I have created the same folders on the MS 2016 server but it has not solved the issue.

I have also tried modifying the registry entry as mentioned in;
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/12415690/how-to-fix-microsoft-excel-cannot-open-or-save-any-more-documents

i have also tried adjusting the trust centre setting in the excel 2013 app but this has not helped either;
http://itsupport.me/windows-tips/microsoft-excel-cannot-open-save-documents-not-enough-available-memory-disk-space/

Has anybody encounter this before on MS 2016 server as the existing solution for 2012 R2 does not work?

Moving to Windows 2016, RDSH vs VDI?

$

We currently manage an 8 node Windows 2008 RDS farm which serves approximately 250 users. We utilise roaming profiles and redirected folders. The majority of our users operate from non-domain joined thin clients. Users connect to a full RDS desktop session rather than using local client desktops and published apps.

We will be replacing the existing thin clients with new domain joined t/clients and domain joined laptops. We are planning to deploy a new Windows 2016 RDS farm. Our initial plan was to stick with RDSH rather than VDI, however, we intend to use published apps with local desktop sessions. are also thinking about utilising both redirected folders and user profile disks.  VDI looks interesting but its unknown territory to us and we're struggling to get to grips with the pros, cons, costs, & licensing implications of RDSH vs VDI. There seems to be a lot of inconsistent and confusing documentation out there!

Anyone been in a similar situation or can point us in the direction of some straight forward documentation?

Hello everyone,

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 VM , which is also a terminal server, which keeps crashing with BSOD.

I've analyzed the crash dump files and it points to usbccgp.sys

Using WinDbg is points to this:

USB\VID_03f0&PID_034a&REV_0121&MI_01\4&1ab5bfd&6&0001

which seems to be HP Elite Keyboard but this device is not installed!

You can download the crash dump files (last 5) here:

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help.

Launching Outlook from RDS But Cannot Terminate

$

Hello,

My goal here is to create an Outlook profile for each user who launches a published app from an RDS server by opening Outlook with zero config and then terminating the Outlook app that was spawned from the RDS server. We have GPO in place to enable Outlook zero config and no PST file (online mode only) when Outlook launches from the server. Each day the user profiles on the RDS have to be removed and are recreated when user logs in next day.

To accomplish this I created a .cmd script file that is launched as a published app:

@echo off
cmd /c Start /min outlook.exe
Start AOSCLUSTER.axc
ping 192.0.2.2 -n 1 -w 30000 > nul
taskkill /f /im Outlook.exe

The Script will start Outlook minimized and will start our ERP program. The script is supposed to wait 30 seconds and then terminate Outlook that was spawned form the server. The Outlook termination command terminates the Outlook session spawned from the server when Outlook isn’t already running locally on the client machine. When Outlook is already running locally on the client machine the taskill command doesn’t kill either Outlook session. Any ideas on how I could get Outlook to terminate when Outlook is already running locally on the client machine?

Standard RDS setup with 10 licenses

I am a newbie as far as Windows 2012 R2 goes. And I am using a dedicated server on GoDaddy, not my own machine. I set up RDS and related items on the server. I purchased 10 CALs and installed them. Everything went well, I thought. But now when I run RD Licensing Diagnoser, it says that the licensing mode for the RD Session Host is not configured. I read that I should select Remote Desktop Services in the Roles and click the Overview tab to access the Session Host. When I do that, I get the following message:

"You are currently logged on as local administrator on the computer. You must be logged on as a domain user to manage servers and collections."  That makes no sense to me. I believe that I installed something out of order and now it's screwed up.

What do I need to do now? Uninstall everything and start over?

Thank you.

RDP Client hang at "Configuring Remote Session" WS2016

$

Within our production environment is the following:

1 x RD Gateway & Connection Broker WS2016

7 x RDSH Machines WS2016

PROBLEM:

The problem we are experiencing is users RDP connections intermittently get stuck at the "configuring remote connection" option when trying to login. Users will get disconnected then are unable to login.

When this problem happens and a user tries to reconnect, I can see there's single HTTP connection on the RDGW that accepted the connection with 0 bytes transferred in either direction. There are no related errors at this time.

RDP clients are various - 8, 8.1, 10, etc.

A reboot of the RDGW temporarily resolve this issue but it tends to come back in a weeks time.

WORK PERFORMED:

- Fully patched RDGW/RDCB

- Disable all redirection in Group Policy

- Bypassing the RDGW and connecting directly to an RDSH machine result in a perfect and stable connection

Can anyone help?

Old RDP Connections to Windows 2016

$

I have an issue with old Windows CE devices connecting to an new Windows 2016 terminal server. The old CE devices use the older login where you get connected to the server and then authenticate, as opposed to RDP 6, where is prompts you for credentials.

The CE devices are only 240x320 touchscreens (Old Motorola MC9090 RF guns), so what happens on the display is the username and password field are cut off, and users have a difficult time selecting these fields.

Previous Windows 2008, the login screen had a different orientation, so it was more user friendly for those devices. Any one have any ideas if its possible to rearrange the screen or change resolution on just this screen?

I have tried just about everything and would really be disappointed to have to revert back to 2008 R2, just because of a login screen. Updating or getting new devices are not possible at this time.

I have also tried:

  • to auto login the account - i know not secure, but could not get it to work
  • remove user profile picture - was not able to get the image removed.

This is a picture of what is displayed:

Thanks for any help on this.

update KB4467697 breaks remote desktop

On a 2012 R2 remote desktop server, update KB4467697 breaks some remote desktop services.  I had the exact same problem with the preview KB4462921.   Removing either update makes the problem disappear.

Passthrough RDP connections through the gateway work just fine so there is no problems there.  The problem seems to be related to RDP on the remote server itself.  These two updates break direct RDP logins, we have to use TeamViewer or visit the physical console in order to gain access to the desktop.  Clients can login to the RDP website and see published apps, they just won't open.

With either of these updates installed, thousands of these errors appear in the event log:
A fatal error occurred while creating an SSL client credential. The internal error state is 10013.

Does anyone have information as to why the latest November 13 cumulative update for Windows Server 2012 R2 breaks RDP and Remote Desktop published apps with 10013 errors in the event log?

RDS 2016 - Nested RDP sessions with printer redirection

We enable printer redirection which works fine for a typical remoteapp deployment where the application is launched and sees the local workstations Printers without issue.  We have a couple of unique apps that end up calling another RDP session to another machine.  Essentially, Workstation--> RDSH --> 2ndserver.  Is there a way for the printer redirection to follow through that second hop, so the 2ndserver will see the end device's printers?

When attempting to add another virtual desktop to my remote desktop collection I'm getting an error.

A new virtual desktop could not be created from the virtual desktop template.

Verify that all the Hyper-V servers in the deployment have the correct network configuration and available hardware resources, and then try again.

I'm trying to figure out what that means. I've looked at the settings of the template vm and it would seem that the network looks right. Mac address set to dynamic.

What could be the cause of this?
