Hi Team,

I unable to delete GracePeriod (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\RCM\GracePeriod)in registry after expired terminal server.

I checked permissions in that GracePeriod option , it doesn't  have permission and i tried to give the permission but no luck, error getting like "unable to give the permission".

I have tried with different logins (Local Administrator,Domain Administrator and Domain admin account)

Please help on this , how to reset GracePeriod to 120 days.

Best Regards,

RDS 2012 - User Profile Disks performance issues

$

We have a 2 node Windows 2012 RDS farm with UPD enabled. All UPD are on a dedicated Win2012 file server. Users documents, desktops, and appdatas are excluded from the UPD but are redirect to a different share on the same file server. Now and then, users complain of long logon times, often where the screen goes black for several minutes. When this occurs users which are already logged onto the RDS servers also report general performance issues issues and error relating to 'unable to access temporary environment, etc. To correct the issue we ask users to log out so we can reboot both RDS servers and the file server. Obviously this is far from ideal and causes a unplanned disruption/downtime. Once the servers have restarted users are then able to log back on to the RDS farm and performance is back to normal. The issue then reoccurs within a matter of weeks or a month. We've ran some perfmon logging on the three servers but couldn't see any obvious signs of resource contention. Strangely, if we log onto the RDS servers as an administrator, who are excluded for folder redir and do not have UPD, we do not witness these problems. We believe the issues is related to the UPD as we also have a legacy four node Win2008 RDS farm. Users on these servers do not have UPD and do not suffer from these issues despite having roaming profiles and redirected folders pointing to the same file server on a different share.

Has anyone come across a similar situation or have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Having issues with UPD in VDI Deployment

$

I have a VDI Deployment with 2 RDVH servers. I am using a Failover clustering for two servers with multiple users.

It shows that a user has previously logged out of a RDS session, and then tries to log back in, however the UPD for that user was “in use” so the user receives a temporary profile instead. Im using 2016 windows server

Also please don’t forget that at the same time we started experiencing these errors, we started having performance issues for the users as well.

When a user first connects, there is a delay (sometimes up to 3-7min) to get a desktop. Then the user will usually open Outlook to check their emails. There is a large delay doing this as well.

It seems like for about 15 min or so after a user logs in, the system/session is EXTREMELY slow. Then after the first 15 min or so, it picks up and runs like normal (speeds).

hello i have 2 servers to use for rds build.

can i install the broker on one of the hosts? or can these roles not be combined with session host role? or better yet can i install the broker on both session host for high availability of the broker role?

obviously best practice dictates to use dedicated server for the broker .

thanks.

RemoteApp Inverting CAPS LOCK Problem - SERVER 2012 R2

Hello Everyone,

I am experiencing an issue that I have been unable to resolve. We have 3 separate application servers (VM's that coexist across 3 physical servers) with server 2012 R2. All of these seem to have a problem with the CAPS lock inverting on RemoteApps. The applications are all different. This ONLY happens with RemoteApps. I have tested the problem using the same user account on a Remote Desktop Session to the server doesnot exhibit the same problem.

On the login screen for the application, I will click in the password box which gives you a indication of the current state the remote session's CAPS LOCK is in. I will turn ON the CAPS LOCK and it will flash for a moment with the warning and immediately go off. From that moment on, it is inverted. I confirmed this by typing in several boxes within the RemoteApps.

I have tested from multiple computers, all of which are all Windows 10 Build 1803 or later. The Server 2012 R2 updates vary widely. I have searched through the release notes for every 2018 update across all 3 machines without success, and the forums seem to paint a picture of a more intermittent problem people are having.

I have turned off all the annoying advanced keyboard options for all my users via group policy (Sticky Keys, filter keys, etc.). I have explored Local Group Policy for option that might pertain to this, I am at a loss for what the problem could be.

Calling all experts, please help. . .

Unable to renewal Windows 2012 RDS Certificate.

On my Windows 2012 RDS connection broker server, I created a cert request in IIS.  After I received the cert from my vendor, I completed the cert request and applied the new cert to the RDS website.

I then go to MMC and export the certificate to a PFX file with a password.

Next, I go to Server Manager>RDS>Overview.  Under Deployment Overview, I go to edit Deployment Properties>Certificates.  I highlight the "RD Connection Broker - Enable SSO" and select existing certifiate.

I specify the cert I export and the password and I get the attached error.

Please advise if you know how to fix it.

Licensing - per Device

Hi,

I want to make sure I calculate correctly the number of 'per device' CALs for the following test scenario:

I have 100 clients connecting from 4 different devices, which means 25 users are connecting from each device to the remote server.

In addition, those 100 clients are not fixed, which means that after some time the previous 100 clients are loggin off and then 100 different clients are logging in instead.

Would it be correct to say I need 4 'per device' licenses?

Thanks,

Kobi

problem: custom .net program can only opened once per Terminal Server

Hello,

We have developed a .net program that is usually usable within a TS environment.
Many of our customers with a single TS 2012R2 are using this program with multiple accounts at once with no problem.

Now we have one customer with a couple of dozen Terminal Servers with the following problem:

As long as two separate accounts are logged on to two different Terminal Servers, each of the accounts can start and use the program without any problem.

As soon as both accounts are logged on to the same Terminal Server, only the account, who opened the program first, can use the program; When the second account tries to start the program, nothing happens.

Unfortunately I don't know much more.

I did some tests already and was able to reproduce the problem using a Server 2012 (non R2 and without the TS Role) and two RDP sessions.

But in a Server 2012R2 with the TS Role installed I could not find any problem with multiple users using the program at the same time.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

thanks in advance

Windows Servr 2016 RDSH - Firewall rules created at every login.

Hi,

I have a setup with the following servers running Windows Server 2016

1x RDGW, RDCB, RDWA, RDLicensing.

5x RDSH

Im using UPD on the collection.

I have noticed very long login times, after policys etc are shown on screen it sits at a black screen for between 20sec and sometimes up to 5min.

I have also noticed that the svchost.exe that controls the Windows Firewall is using 25% to 50% when a user logs in and using around 1200Mb memory.

After I found this I checked the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security and found thousands of Cortana, Work or school account, Your account, Contact Support rules.

I found a script in this thread that could delete the rules https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/9aad7675-d1ba-4900-9d85-0cd117f5514f/new-firewall-rules-created-for-each-user?forum=win10itprosetup

This made the CPU usage and memory usage go down to normal levels, but after every login a user does it builds up the list of rules again. With many users logging in to the system the rules build up very fast and the login times gets high and every server gets slow.

Example on our RDSH01 server that have been running in production since 2017-04-13 the script found and deleted 66153 rules that it found with "$Rules = Get-NetFirewallRule -All | Where-Object {$profiles.sid -notcontains $_.owner -and $_.owner }"

The script also tryed to get rules with this command "$rules2 = Get-NetFirewallRule -All -PolicyStore ConfigurableServiceStore | Where-Object { $profiles.sid -notcontains $_.owner -and $_.owner }" but fails with an "not enough space error"

The script removes the rules from here with the content of $rules "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\FirewallRules"

and $rules2 was meant to clean up at "HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\RestrictedServices\Configurable\System"

but doesnt do anything because of the error on the Get-command. If I try to access it with regedit it stops to respond, guessing there are too many items in that container for it to handle.

Anyone know a solution for this problem?

Regards Fredrik

RDS 'full desktop' vs. 'apps'?? (pros & cons)

I've tried to find comments or articles about the pros & cons of using an RDS 'full desktop' vs. 'apps'.

Particularly if using 'apps' would help better manage the RDS hosts' memory and cpu requirements, particularly in light of needing to offer Google Chrome as an additional browser because Internet Explorer is getting old and can not display some sites. But Chrome eats up a lot of resources, particularly if people leave tabs/windows running.

We presently have a lot of device licenses and I am also thinking about changing them to user licenses instead, this would enable using the new HTML5 client.

I imagine anything said about this topic would apply to Citrix XenApp too.

Thank you, Tom

What RDP and windows CALS are needed for the following scenario

Hi all,

I am getting confusing answers so I am hoping a licencing expert can help me.

I have a client that requires 6 staff to be able to access a server at any time. They then also require us to be able to log in as their support provider if/when issues arise. This would be up to 7 concurrent logins.

I am told you get 2 RDP licences includes with Windows server.

We have decided already that user licences are what is required as the staff at their organisation can log in from 3 different locations.

I want to know in the above how many RDP licences need to be purchased.

Do we only need 5 as there are the two provided on Windows servers?

Do we need 6 as their are 6 staff and one administrator needed?

Do I need 7 as there will be seven concurrent logins?

Had to uninstall my RDS services and reinstall. When I try to change the WorkSpace name through powershell I get this error.

Set-RDWorkspace : Failed to update the workspace on RD Connection Broker server RDS.DOMAIN.COM.
Error: Exception calling "Put" with "0" argument(s): ""

Any ideas? I am running powershell as admin.

RDS Gateway Domain-Joined in New DMZ or Existing?

Is there a best practice regarding putting an RDS domain-joined gateway in an existing DMZ with other systems or creating a new isolated DMZ for it?

Thought process is that if a system in the DMZ is compromised it could more readily lead to a compromise of the gateway and then straight to a domain controller.

Hi Support,

Can 2FA be installed on the Windows server 2012 & 2016 Essentials?  If yes what is the best practice? If not can anyone recommend a third party software to achieve the goal?  I want to have 2 FA for connecting to the local workstations via RWA (remote web access or access anywhere).

I appreciate your help.

Jamshid
