How best to improve graphics performance on RDS host servers??

$

We have a small RDS farm running on Windows Server 2012 R2.

All the RDS hosts and related servers are virtual servers running on vSphere 5.5 (hardware version 8 if that makes any difference).

I've seen various articles about configuring RemoteFX in Group Policy, but they are confusing.

I'm not asking about improving things like watching YouTube videos etc., I'm asking about improving graphics in general, like screen redraws and displaying mouse movements, keystrokes, etc.

What are the best things to do to improve these things within an RDS farm??

I will try increasing the video RAM within the host servers' VM settings but this is a guess, and these hosts are logged into by multiple users over VPN connections...

Thank you, Tom

Easy Print driver not working with specific HP printers.

I have a Server 2008 x64 TS environment setup for our external customers that all run the same remote application.  Reports from the remote application are created in Crystal Reports.  I use the Easy Print universal driver for printing.  I have 400+ users and for the most part, everything works fine.

PROBLEM:  Starting earlier this year, I have a very small number (but growing) of users that can't print to their local printer.  In some cases the printer is directly connected to the desktop and in others it is an IP printer.  In all cases the printer is either an HP p2035n or an HP p1102w.  The print job never reaches the printer and it generates "Error 6161" in the System event log on my TS.  In each instance I have ensured that the client computer meets the minimum requirements for TS Easy Print driver.

As I stated earlier, I have 400+ other clients with many makes/models of printers that work perfectly.  I'm not inclined to think it is a problem with my TS since so few clients have this problem.

Any thoughts?  I am happy to try solutions or provide information as I can, but it may take a little time as these devices are not in my control.  Thanks.

Enable Kerberos for RDS in 2012 R2 environment

Hi!

How can I enable Kerberos for RDS in 2012 R2 environment?

I found such article for 2008:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/rds/archive/2009/05/20/creating-kerberos-identity-for-rd-session-host-farms-part-i-using-the-remote-desktop-services-provider-for-windows-powershell.aspx

But it doesn't work for 2012 R2.

What steps must I do to enable it in 2012 R2?

Thanks!

Server Authentication Certificate Template GP setting not updating registry

$

Hi,

I'm working on a windows 2012 domain, and I've applied the Server Authentication Certificate Template group policy to a 2012 server I'm working on (I applied the relevant GPO to the OU that the server is in). I set it (by oid) to use a certificate template that is configured on the CA. The template has Server and Client Auth in the Application Policy extension.

An RSOP on the target server reports that the GP setting has been applied.

The registry setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\TemplateCertificate hasn't appeared on that server though. The certificate isn't being enrolled (it doesn't appear in certlm.msc) and the self-signed certificate is still being presented when RDPing to the server.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Change state of VDI machines after Collection provision.

When I add new VDI machines to Collection (incrising number), they gets created into RDVH in "saved" state. I would like get them up and running right after they get provisioned and wait for their primary user. There is no setting for that when creating new collection. My VM master image is shut down, as it should be.

Additional question is that, apperently this RDS VDI scenario is very powershell driven, since GUI misses lot of options. Will there be any improvements of control VDI in vNEXT? I´m evaluating RDS VDI before going to production, and there will be lot of trouble because lack of control.

need help to understanding high availability in RDS 2012 R2

Hi everyone,

I have a Hyperv cluster and want to deploy high-available Remote desktop session-based host.

How can I make all of RDS farm members identical? For example, I will prepare 3 hosts. Should I install on all of 3 hosts the same apllications with same settings, or is there a way to avoid this?

scaling remote desktop display to larger size ("pixel doubling") ?

I'm displaying the console of various remote hosts using Remote Desktop on my 2560x1600 display, and they come out very small. I would like to enlarge the RDP windows and have the remote displays' pixels increased in size accordingly. Is this possible?

I initially thought RDP smart sizing would take care of this but it seems this feature only supports making pixels smaller (scaling down, not up).

Note that I want any configuration changes to be done to my local machine only. Changing text size, DPI, or any other desktop related setting on remote hosts is undesired as they are correctly setup when used in other contexts.

Thanks
Mike

Failed to create KVP sessions string. Error Code 0x8007007A

I have two RDS servers running Server 2012, and since a couple of days users are reporting they get disconnected often. In the eventlogs, I found a couple of events where a user was disconnected without further information. I also found a lot of "Failed to create KVP sessions string" events. I couldn't find any relevant information about this event, but it appears the most at moments when users are being disconnected from the RDS server.

This is the event:

Set domain as CustomRdpProperty

$

Hi,

I've been struggling for a while with 2012 R2 RDS deployments to negate the need for users to enter their domain when signing in.

I've customised the RDWeb so that domain is not needed to sign in to Web Access, using this guide:

http://msfreaks.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/properly-removing-the-domain-prefix-requirement-from-rd-web-access-2012-r2/

However, users still have to enter DOMAIN\username in RDC.

If I edit the .rdp file in notepad and add "username:s:DOMAIN\", it works - users are prompted for username and password, but the domain is pre-populated. (NB. I have also seen in http://www.donkz.nl/files/rdpsettings.html that"domain:s:" is an RDP property, but it has never worked in any way for me.)

I run:

Get-RDSessionCollection | Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration -CustomRdpProperty "use multimon:i:0`nusername:s:DOMAIN\"

Get-RDSessionCollection | Set-RDSessionCollectionConfiguration | fl

...shows that the property has been added correctly. I also see it in the registry at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal       Server\CentralPublishedResources\PublishedFarms. However, after an IISRESET, the property does not make it into the RDP file generated by RDWeb.

How can I add this seemingly simple property?

RDP incorectly using 2008-r2 compatible mode (VDI on 2012 r2 / 8.1 enterpise)

$

I have set up a VDI solution for testing, but I am having an issue getting a connection using the new features added in 2012-r2 and 8.1

When connecting from a Windows computer using the RDP client, I am getting a message logged on the server that session is using 2008-r2 compatible mode. My whole reason for setting this up was to test the improvements in 2012-r2, then make a decision about what to put into testing and then production.

The relevant log entries:

RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS - EventID 165
RemoteFX Encoding for RemoteFX Clients designed for Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 is enabled and a compatible session was created.

RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS - EventID 162
The client supports version 0x80105 of the RDP graphics protocol, client mode: 0, H264 enabled: 0

The logs above show a compatibility mode session is being made and the new H264 encoding is not being used.
I have spent some time going through all the RDS group policy settings, but nothing seems to have any effect.
How can I get the RDP client to connect using the RDP 8.1 features?

Note. I have tried the ServerTechnical Preview/Windows 10 Enterprise Preview, and The new features all worked straight away with no extra configuration, on the same hardware.

System Setup is:
Server 2012 r2 standard (this is running all the RDS roles on one server, its just for testing)
8.1 Enterprise Pooled VMs
8.1 Enterprise RDP Client

Hardware setup for the server is:
Intel i7-5820k
X99 chipset board
32GB DDR4
2x Geforce GT730 (I have also tried a Gefore GTX670 and a Radeon 6870)

Wrong certificate remote web gateway

Hello,

I am not sure which part of the forum to post this.

I am having a problem with remote web gateway on server 2012 R2

It works correctly internally

I can login externally and the login page displays the correct certificate.

When I try to connect to a computer externally it displays the certificate for our Exchange 2013 server complains about the mismatch and doesnt allow me to continue.

Any idea on how I can solve this issue?

Kind regards

Administrator Unable To Run Powershell Commands When UPD Enabled

$

Hi All,

We have a single Windows 2012 R2 RDS configured with UPD enabled for the defined collection. So far everything is working fine for standard users; however, the domain administrator can no longer run PowerShell commands (see attached screenshot).

I believe this is the result of the UPD "impersonating" the local c:\. How can I get around this for domain administrator accounts?

Thanks in advance.

Low Resolution = Dark Blue Screen (2012R2)

Hello,

I am troubleshooting an issue around low-resolution connections on a fresh Windows 2012R2  server on AWS. Starting with a brand new install I am able to connect to the server with a device that has a 320x240 resolution, however, once I do nothing but add Remote Desktop services related roles I can no longer connect. The connection is established but instead of seeing the desktop I am presented with nothing but a dark blue screen. Clicking the mouse launches the start menu but nothing opens in the foreground and clicking the Desktop tile does nothing.

Funny thing is, I can steal the session from a normal terminal and it logs in fine.

Has anyone ever see anything like this?

Error installing licences

Hello.

I manage a certain Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard server. This server has now the need to become a Remote Desktop server, so I have now installed the roles Remote Desktop Licensing and Remote Desktop Sessions Host.

This server doesn't have a internet connection, so I had to use the "Web Browser" connection method to activate the licensing server. It activated well with the key provided at activate.microsoft.com. I have now attempted to install the purchased licenses using the same method. I generated the licensing key correctly also at activate.microsoft.com using my license details, but when I try to install the licences on the server, it seems to be rejecting the licensing key. I get the error:

"The RD Licensing Manager was not able to install the client license key pack. Ensure that the correct information is entered, and then retry this operation."

What could be wrong? I've followed the steps correctly and the licence won't work. Been searching online but couldn't find any clue. Maybe I inserted some info wrong about my license when I was generating the licencing key? But I doubt it because in this case the site should return an error, correct? But if this is the case, how can I scrap this licencing key and generate a new one? Or can I simply start generating many keys, choosing different options until one of them works?

Other thing is that my licence program is "Enterprise Agreement", but the Install Licenses Wizard only shows "License Pack (Retail Purchase)". Been searching online for this case but all the install licences guidelines say just to click"next" so I'm not sure if there's a problem here. Anyway there is no way to change this licence program type on the RD Licensing Manager.

Please help. Thank you.

2012 RemoteApp: file associations windows 8 only?

$

I am currently testing RemoteApp and it currently looks like the only way to setup file associations is to set "Specify default connection URL" under RemoteApp and Desktop Connections. This setting requires at least 2012, 8, or RT. Is there any way to get this to work in windows 7? This is a feature we would really like to use.

The connection has been terminated because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote computer

All of a sudden, my users are getting “The connection has been terminated because an unexpected server authentication certificate was received from the remote computer”. I looked at the server and nothing was changed.  I noticed that if I go into the general TAB of the Terminal Server Configuration, I set the certificate to “Auto Generate”, it works. This solution is just a work around as I want to use a Certificate Authority Certificate “Godaddy” that I created for the server. Choosing the “Auto Generate” means it’s using a self-signed certificate. I’m noticing some threads are stating you have to insure the certificate is installed on the XP workstations. This will not be feasible as I have 100 users using Terminal Server and most of them are not connected to our domain, so using GPO is not an option. Is there something going on with Godaddy Certs or my server?

Black spots with RemoteApps using the Microsoft Remote Desktop on a mac

Hi, I'm dealing with a very strange problem with black spots while using a remoteapp. See the picture for the black spots. It's only happening when I use the MS Remote Desktop App on a mac (version 8.0.12, latest version of the appstore).

The RDS enviroment that we're using is Server 2012 R2 based with all the RD roles installed on several servers. Has someone any idea where to look? I've tried several things, LAN experience on the RD Web access disabled, new user without roaming profile, nothing works. Sorry for the big picture...

Regards,

Michiel
