RDS licensing problem

$

Hello!

I have a curious problem with RDS Licencing.

I have 7 RDS Licences and when it is random when some user wants to connect via RDP, he will see a message like that: "The number of connections to this computer is limited and all connections are in use right now. Try connecting later or contact your system administrator."

At that moment there is less then 7 connections obviously.

I have tried to understand what's going on and I've found that in Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-LocalSessionManager/Operational event log there is info about the connection procedure:

"Begin session arbitration:

User: NS3369234\Manager 1

Session ID: 8"

and the error:

"Session 8 has been disconnected, reason code 0"

The error code could be random. Sometimes 0, and sometimes 12.

Do you have any suggestions about the way I could investigate the problem further or what is exactly causing it?

As a matter of fact, it is absolutely doesn't depend of the client's OS or ISP.

Having to restart RDS Service each morning

Hey,

We are running Server2012 Standard, with all patches installed.

Each morning I need to restart the RDS Service as users get a 'Cannot connect to the remote computer as an error occured' message

There's nothing in any event logs, and once i restart the service it it's fine for the whole day... Until the next day, when it happens all over again

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Thanks For your help!

Black Screen on all new Connections, SessionHost has to be rebooted

hi,

we're suffering from session hosts that produce black screen errors in a RDS 2016 farm.

already connected users can mostly work, all new connections end up with a black screen.

to resolve the error the server has to be restarted.

i can say that

- upon checking the registry for this SID i end up at "ProfileNotifyHandler Class app id {E10F6C3A-F1AE-4adc-AA9D-2FE65525666E} inprocserver32, C:\Windows\System32\gameux.dll".

- starting explorer.exe per taskmgr does not open an actual explorer window although the process appears in taskmgr

- tskmgr, eventvwr, cmd can be started without problems

- affected users appear as active in RDS management

- no third party security software is installed

- farm is fully patched

- HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileGUID and ProfileList are ok (no old or .bak entries)

looking forward on how to resolve this without  rebooting the server or a permanent fix

thank you

best regards

RemoteApp on Windows 2016 VM Server on Azure

We are looking to move our current hosted solution to Azure.

Our  current solution in the cloud consists of  three Windows 2008 R2  VM’s in a workgroup   One SQL Server VM – heavily dependent on SQL Database Mail and SQL Scheduled Jobs , One Web Server VM, One RDP server that uses RemoteApp to distribute a Windows Client application after connecting to a VPN.  We also use the RDP server to run several windows applications (windows service and scheduled task).   I had originally posted to the Azure VM forum and was referred to this forum for RDP issues.

With Windows 2008 R2 server I was easily able to create RemoteApp. .rdp files (without RDWeb)  for our Windows application and use those .rdp files to distribute to our customers.  The user accounts were created using Computer Management / Local Users / Groups.

From my understanding is that the functionality changed with Windows 2012 R2 and later.  To be able to set up RemoteApp, the machine must be joined to a domain as this give you a setup UI to publish your application(RDWeb to create rdp file).  This would mean two additional servers (domain controllers) and incur additional costs. The user accounts would then have to be created on the Azure DC Active directory.  Is RemoteApp supported on a Windows 2016 workgroup VM in Azure without using RDWeb to publish the application?   I found an article on the forum that talks about creating / editing  your own rdp file and registry entries in lieu of a UI.  I also found a third party application (RemoteApp Tool) which creates a .rdp file.   Could we use those methods and still be supported by Microsoft?   I also see there was a RemoteApp Service on Azure that is been now discontinued.   It has been replaced with Citrix Virtual App Essentials.   From my understanding, this too would require domain controllers at additional cost.  Are there any better solutions to achieve our goal? Will we be able to set up a VPN connection for our customers to the RDP (RemoteApp) server on Azure with any of the solutions?

Thanks,

Remote desktop or session based for high memory/IOPS applications

Hi,  we are about 20 users that require virtual desktops preferably 4 core and 16 Gb and apart from productivity apps like Office 365, we need to run some high IOPS intensive apps.  vGPU is also preferred.  What would you suggest?  Should we go with session host based approach or Virtual desktops option.  planning to set it up in the cloud (likely in Azure or other provider).

appreciate if someone could suggest

Server 2016 Remote Apps are starting in separate sessions

I have an odd problem.  Everywhere I read, it seems remote apps that are started from the same client should start in the same session if I haven't logged off from that session.  My apps are starting in separate sessions.

I have apps installed on Server 2016 and published through RemoteApp. I also have a 15 minute session idle timeout enabled.  When that 15 minutes is about to be reached, each app individually gives a 2 minute logout warning.  So if I have 3 apps idling, I get that warning 3 times.  In the server manager, under Connections, I can also see 3 individual connections.   I don't remember changing anything to set them to open up as separate sessions. Does anyone know how to reverse this? Thank you.

After update on client station are RemoteAPP slower, and  right mouse button is unresponsive, or react verly long time...

It is a big problem for us.

PS: after replace mstsc.exe and mstscax.dll from older version Windows 10 is all OK. but this is not a solution.

Thanks.

RDP session not reconnecting to same session when I move computers

Hi all, just curious if there is something obvious --

We have 3 similar systems and this is only an issue on 1 of them.

All 3 systems are configured with 2 domain controllers and 30ish vms

We have one machine we (a crew of 2) can connect to via RDP in each system. (All kinds of ACLs, firewalls, ect since we are in a process environment)

The system in question always drops my RDP session before connecting to it.

Example -

I can be in my RDP session at my desk, walk across the room and attempt to connect back to my session and I can see Windows stating "Signing Out" and then my RDP session is dropped.

I have to reconnect to get back into my session.

This is a pain since sometimes I have files and applications open I am trying to access from the other PC I am attempting to connect to.

I have reviewed all the GPO options for Remote Services and they are all set to default in all 3 systems, although the one system is giving me troubles.

Anyone have a quick tip for something obvious I should look at?

Any input helps

Edit-

All machines in the environment are Windows Server 2012 (non R2)

Unable to remote desktop to windows server 2012 due to failed to create self signed certificate

My Windows server 2012 standard has been enabled with Remote Desktop.

It has been working until recent but now my remote desktop client always gives me this error: 'This computer can't connect to the remote computer'.

When i check the event viewer from my 2012 server after trying to remote desktop to it, i see this:

event id: 1057

Severity: Error

Source:: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager

Log: System

Message detail:

The RD Session Host Server has failed to create a new self signed certificate to be used for RD Session Host Server authentication on SSL connections. The relevant status code was Object already exists.

I've tried to follow the instructions from the another technet post: removing the existing self signed certificate (by using mmc), then restarting the Remote Desktop Configuration service to re-generate the certifiacte, then configure in RD Session Host Configuration (tsconfig.msc)

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/8df42746-465f-4902-95a6-121ef1f0fd68/the-terminal-server-has-failed-to-create-a-new-self-signed-certificate-to-be-used-for-terminal

It did not work for me. No new self signed certificate has been re-generated. I also could not find RD Session Host Configuration from my server.

KB4091664

KB4091664 was installed on our Windows 2016 server and instantly inbound remote desktop connections quit being accepted.  The error indicated a total lack of communication.  I uninstalled KB4091664 and the problems went away.  Do I need this KB4091664 update and if so how do I correct the problems with remote desktop?

Remote Desktop into Server 2016 gives black screen. Same issue as bug recently found/fixed in 2012 R2

Is anyone aware of a fix to this issue?

See the post from Sasha (Microsoft): here

Here is a post to the MS KB acknowledging and providing a resolution for 2012 R2:here

To resolve the issue when it happens, i need to kill the TermService service (it won't stop normally as it is in a deadlock state). I can then start the service again and it's business as usual until it happens again.

I can't see any info about this in RDS 2016... Anyone else? MS?

Thanks,

Stephen

Blank Windows / White Bars when using Remote Apps

$

I am having an issue, exactly as described in a Spiceworks post, 1962989-rds-remoteapp-server-second-empty-window-opens-when-clients-connect, I cannot post links yet.

However, that posters solution of it being a firewall config issue is not the case for me.

Basically, at random times throughout the day, users will suddenly get additional RDP windows that suddenly appear in their taskbar, that do not state any particular program, and when you click on one, all it displays is a white bar where you'd think the top of the Window would normally be.  These additional blank windows cannot be closed, not even forcefully from the client side.  The only way around it is to have the user log completely out of all remote apps and disconnect, and wait a minute, then sign back in.  (Server is set to log off disconnected users after 1 minute in order to work around this incredibly irritating issue).

I've modified keep alive timeouts, changed physical firewalls, RemoteFX settings, and even ran network traffic analyzers between both the server and the clients to see if packet loss was an issue, and it is not.

Server is Windows 2016 hosted on AWS.

Clients are all Windows 10 v1803.

RDS Server User Desktop Icon Display issues

Hello Guys

We are in the end phase of publishing our new 2016 RDS Server. Now its the last 5% (Fixing Appearence Issues).

And the main problem right now is this:

Either the text vanishes/cuts off or it changes its color/loses the shadow/frame.

When i refresh it gets back to normal (Google Chrome is the expected, ThinLinc and VNC Viewer is what i get).

When i hover over the icon it reverts back and this is just ugly.

Im not really sure what the issue could be so i searched for a bit but couldn't find anything regarding this issue. I also did a sfc /scannow to check if any of the files that are responsible for this might be corrupt or something but to no vail.

This is the 2nd server we setup that has the same issue.

I appreaciate every bit of help.

Kind regards

Pkey

RemoteApp and Desktop Connections shortcuts in Start Menu

Hi,

I have received a question from a customer that I can't seem to find an answer to.

The customer is currently running af PoC on a new RDS 2016. All Windows 10 (v1709 or 1803) endpoints. They are using the RemoteApp and Desktop Connections client to present shortcuts to various RemoteApps in the users Start Menu on the Windows 10 endpoint.

Is it possible to change the name of these shortcuts? More specifically remove the appended RDS workspace name from the RemoteApp shotcut.

RDS Session State

Hi Guys,

I am wondering if someone can explain this to me. I am trying to find all idle or disconnected users on session host servers and with powershell that is easy but there are options like state active and state connected. Does this state connected mean that the user is idle, connected to rds session host but either has minimized rdp session or just not working on the computer.

What other states can I expect except these

Server 2012 R2 manageability online cannot get role and feature data

Everything was fine until recently that error showed up.
my role and features was set to Active Directory and RDS, and it worked good for about a year.
Now, when I restart the server, the Server Manager shows me no errors and everything is loaded, but in about 30 minutes the error shows up again and the role and features mentioned above disappear.

CPU fair share scheduling - What CPU ?

I understood that fair share is based on CPU load. But what CPU ?

Currently administering a farm of W2008 R2 RDS. Fair share being enabled by default. Each server having 12vCPUs.

On occasion some users are complaining about sluggishness (network and Disk I/Os being ridiculously low). I have no explanation about the sluggishness except for different threads from different users running on one single overloaded vCPU. Despite the fact that the 12vCPUs are not all overloaded

So, How Fair share actually works across multiple vCPUs ?

Is it a mature/better technology in Windows 2016  ?

Customizing Server 2016 start menu - remove Settings and Search icon

$

Dear Community,

I'm evaluating Windows Server 2016 and Remote Desktop Services at the moment. My goal is to customize the start menu individually for every user.  I plan on doing this in two steps.

Step 1: Remove all icons from start menu.
Step 2: Add necessary icons with group policy preferences

In Step 1 I was able to remove/hide every icon, except these two: "Settings" and "Search".
Step 2 is working fine, I can add the shortcuts based on group membership via gpp.

Another approach was to redirect the start menu to a central file share and use access based enumeration to show each user its individual start menu. Unfortunately these two icons are still there.

Any ideas or recommendations on how to remove or hide these two icons for my users?

Thank you in advance!
